EMPLOYMENT HISTORY/ WORK EXPERIENCE

1.From February 2004 to May 2005:Worked as Programme Coordinator with BHASHA Research and Publication Centre (at New Delhi)- an organization working on oral traditions, languages and identity issues of the indigenous people, denotified and nomadic communities of India.

2.From August 2000 till January 2002:Worked as Programme Officer in theCentre for Local Self-governance, PRIA (Participatory Research in Asia), a reputed Indian NGO, based at New Delhi.

Job Responsibilities included:

a)Programme Management of PRIA's national programme (JAP - Joint Action Programme) on local self-governance. This included providing programme directions, ensuring greater convergence between different components of the programme, supporting partner organisations in their programme planning and budgeting and preparing donor reports. This also included drawing up the detailed budget for the entire PRI programme for the fiscal year.

b)Coordination of National Resource Centre of PRIA on local self-governance and ensuring proactive dissemination of various documents and material on Panchayati Raj Institutions.

Key Achievements:

  • Chief Editor of Bulletin of Centre for Local Self-governance (Quarterly bulletin), titled Participation & Governance, with a circulation across South Asia.
  • “The State of Panchayats: A Participatory Perspective” - Co-author of this book, which documents the first hand experiences of PRIA and its partners over the past six years in strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutions. While documenting the gains and constraints on various aspects of PRI functioning, it also puts forth certain recommendations towards making these institutions vibrant loci of local self-governance.
  • Did programme management for PRIA's Joint Programme on strengthening Panchayati Raj for the financial year 2001-02.

3.From 1st December 1999 to May 2000: Worked as Manager-Learning Systems with Samarthan-Centre for Development Support, a development support organisation based in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India.

Job responsibilities during this period included, developing the Management Information System and Systems for Programme Management using the Logical Framework approach. The key achievements during the period are as follows:

a)Facilitated and finalised the Logical Framework Approach-based strategy document for the next three years of the organisation’s work.

b)Developed a detailed MIS for programme monitoring, including reporting formats, flow of information, roles and responsibilities of each individual staff and different organs of Samarthan in terms of levels of analysis and consolidation of information.

c)Identification of capacity building needs of the entire staff to achieve greater synergy between the in-house capacities and intended achievement levels of the organisation.

d)Did the final editing of a number of documents, including, the ‘Civil Society in the New Millennium’ report.

e)Involved in the recruitment process of staff to ensure match between the individuals and organisation’s values and programme goals.

f)Prepared the Annual Report of Samarthan for the year 1999–2000. This included collation and analysis of information on programmes and processes within the organisation and report writing.

4.From October 1998 to November 1999:Worked as Freelance Development Professional and my assignments during this period include:

a)Assisted Samarthan in preparing its Annual Report for the year 1998-99, by facilitating the review processes and report writing.

b)Prepared a report on the Leprosy Eradication Campaign (LEC) of 1997, titled "LEC Projects in Madhya Pradesh: Experiments and Experiences-1997",for the Directorate of Health Services (NLEP Cell), Madhya Pradesh, on behalf of DANLEP (DANIDA)- Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal. I was involved in compilation of various reports, data/information analysis and preparation of the report.

c)Did selection of articles for suitability for publication and copy editing of various articles on woman’s issues to be published in a book form by an ActionAid satellite company called Books for Change.

d)Prepared a workshop report on ‘Women’s Health: Problems and Remedies’ (with special focus on leprosy eradication) for DANLEP, DANIDA, Madhya Pradesh.

e)Did the final editing of the report on ‘The Modified Leprosy Elimination Campaign, April 1998’ for the Directorate of Health Services, Government of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal.

f)Translated a manual on 'Functional Literacy for the Empowerment of Women' from English to Hindi, for ActionAid, Bhopal.

5.From January 1997 to June 1997:

Worked as Associate Coordinator-Institutional Learning with Samarthan-a development support organisation and one of the RSOs (Regional Support Organisations) of PRIA under its Joint Programme for Strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutions.

Job responsibility was to conduct research work and organise workshops on various developmental issues affecting the life of the poor and to document the learnings of the works carried out by Samarthan.

Key Achievements:

  • Detailed work plans using Logical Framework Approach (LFA)
  • Organised workshop on process documentation for many support organisations from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar.
  • "Stakeholders' Analysis: The Women's and Children's Health Project in India" (Technical Report No. 13), for Partnerships for Health Reform (PHR), Maryland, USA. I was involved in planning and conducting interviews with various stakeholders, data processing and analysis and report writing (partly).

6.From February 1995 to October 1996:

Worked as Lecturer in the Department of English, Faculty of Commerce, M.S.University, Baroda. During this period, I was associated in the preparation of the Status Report for 10 Years of Canadian Studies in India, jointly undertaken by the Canadian Studies Centre, Baroda and the Canadian High Commission in India.

7.From January 1994 to February 1995:

Worked as Programme Executive with N.M. Sadguru Water and Development Foundation, Dahod (Gujarat), heading its Monitoring and Documentation Division.

Job responsibilities included monitoring and documentation of the organisation’s irrigation, water resource development, watershed, social forestry, non-farm income generation and village institution development programmes.

Key Achievements: The documentation during this period included,

  • Preparation of the quarterly and annual reports of the organisation.
  • Involvement of women in the Social Forestry Programme of Sadguru over 5 years (1990 through 1994), NMSWDF, 1995.
  • Community managed irrigation systems in Panchmahals, Gujarat, NMSWDF, 1994.
  • Process documentation of system turnover of Lift Irrigation Projects to communities, NMSWDF, 1994.

8.From July 1989 to July 1993:

Worked as Temporary Lecturer in the Faculty of Commerce and Arts for four years (1989-1993) at MaharajaSayajiraoUniversity, Baroda.

OTHER WORK EXPERIENCES:

Prepared a Project Profile for ‘Documentation of Literature in India’s Tribal Languages (80 languages) and conservation and promotion of that Literature’, undertaken by Bhasha Research and Publication Centre, Baroda (an NGO), largely funded by Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, The Sahitya Academy and the State Government of Gujarat.

Jointly edited a journal titled ‘A Journal of New Creative Writing’, published in December 1990.

Many translation works from Hindi to English and vise versa, including the translation and editing work for a development publishing house called Books for Change, for an international NGO called ActionAid and DANLAP, an initiative of DANIDA.
