CHAPTER – III

DEMOGRAPHIC

CHARACTERISTICS

CHAPTER - III
DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS

3.1DEMOGRAPHY

The ultimate objective of planning is for the welfare of community. Unless the critical analysis of the population is done, adequate programming could not be envisaged for the betterment of the human life. The community consists of social group which in turn comprises a number of individuals as well as social groups. Man is the basic factor to be considered while planning for the future. It becomes extremely necessary to have a reasonably good idea of shape, size, composition and character of the community. Also, all the social utilities and amenities provided should be shared by each individual of the town with equal rights. The population of Murgud town is 11,188 souls as per 2011 census.

3.2GROWTH OF POPULATION

Town population for the last seven decades is given below.

Year / Population / Decennial variation increase in decade / Percentage variation/ percent increase in decade / Incremental Increase per decade
1951 / 5,637 / -- / -- / --
1961 / 6,067 / + 430 / + 7.62% / --
1971 / 7,480 / + 1413 / + 23.28% / + 983
1981 / 8,613 / + 1133 / + 15.14% / - 280
1991 / 8,945 / + 332 / + 3.85% / - 801
2001 / 9,766 / + 821 / + 9.17% / + 489
2011 / 11,188 / + 1422 / + 14.56 / + 601
Average / 8,242 / + 925 / + 12.21 / + 198

It is seen from the above table that the rate of growth of population in the decade 1961 to 1971 was 23.28% and that in the decade between 1971-1981 was 15.14%. But after the year 1981, the rate of growth has dropped down to 3.85% for the decade 1981-1991 and has come up to 9.17% in the decade 1991-2001. Further, there is seen an increase in population in the last decade. The last decade of 2011 shows an increase of 14.56%. So, it seems to be a natural growth without migration and is now necessary to consider for estimating the projected population.

3.3 STRUCTURE OF POPULATION

As per 2011 Census, there are 5737males and 5451 females which were 51.28 % and 48.72 %respectively to the total town population. The number of females per 1000 males was 950. Out of the total literate population of 8760, males are 4843 and females are 3917 literate. The literacy percentage therefore works out at 78.73 % of the total population.

3.4DISTRIBUTION OF POPULATION

The population of the town as per 2011 census is 11,188. The above population is distributed within 17 wards of the town. The ward wise population is shown in Table No.2 appended with this report.

The highest density of population is 641 persons per hectares in Ward No.5, while the lowest density is 881 persons per hectare in Ward No. 17. The denser ward no's. are 15,10,14,& 5 though density of population is less than 250 persons per hectare except ward no. 15.

As per recent formation of 4 new wards, the highest gross density of population is 21.64 persons per hectares in Ward No.3, while the lowest density is 5.75 persons per hectare in Ward No. 4. The denser ward no's are 3,2 & 1 eventhough density of population is less than 250 persons per hectare.

3.5OCCUPATIONAL STRUCTURE

The working population of the town as per 2011 census is 6299 souls out of which 3822 are male workers and 2477 are female workers. This gives labour participation ratio at 56 per cent which is less than the State and National participation ratio. The working population is shown in Table No.11 appended with this report.

3.6 EMPLOYMENT PATTERN

The total number of workers in primary, secondary and tertiary sector as per 2001 census were 4911 i.e. 50.28 % of the total 9766 population. The same during 2011 census is 6299 i.e. at 56 % of the total population of the town. After comparison of the two census, it is seen that the workers during the census of 2001 and 2011 is slightly on the increase even though the percentage of workers to the population is nearby the same. This indicates that the workers has also increased as per rate of population rise.

3.7FUNCTIONAL CLASSIFICATION

The primary sector workers as per 2011 census are 46.82% , Secondary workers are22.22% and tertiary sector workers are30.96%. The town is thus dominated by primary sector activities during 2011 census.
