National Teach Ag Day Lesson Plan

Goal of Lesson: To have students feel the different emotions that an agriculture teacher feels each day in their job by having students complete activities meant to induce those feelings.

Objective: To persuade students to consider a career in agricultural education by describing the daily life and emotions that an agriculture teacher experiences.

Interest Approach / Pose the question: “Besides making lots of money, what is your greatest hope about your future career?”
The question will be on the SMART board as students enter the room and they will write their responses on a slip of paper. Before we start, I will ask a few students to share.
Feeling #1 & #2: Stress and Frustration / Students will complete a word search about agriculture teachers while being timed.
At the end of the time, students will have to put their pencils down and will not be able to continue.
After the activity, I will ask students: “What emotions did you feel during the activity?”
Once they say stress, I will ask: “How do you feel now, after time is up but you are not finished with your work?”
They will answer “frustrated.”
Once students have described that they have felt these 2 emotions, I will talk about times that I have felt stressed or frustrated, but I will conclude with how it all ends up OK in the end.
Feeling # 3, #4, and #5: Happiness, Pride, Accomplishment/Success / Students will choose from a variety of agricultural coloring sheets or they can choose to draw their own picture to describe what an agriculture teacher teaches each day. They will have at least 10 minutes to complete this task. I will say: “The best drawing and the best coloring will get a prize at the end.”
Once students are done, or as they are completing their task (whichever time allows for), I will walk around the room and give out candy to each student at they are working and I will also praise them with a specific compliment to each of them.
Once they are close to finishing, I will ask them to stop and we will discuss their feelings after the activity. Once students say they felt: “happy, proud, accomplished, successful, etc,” I will begin with talking about how an agriculture teacher also experiences these feelings on a daily basis.
I will show them slides of specific moments that I have felt each of these emotions in my career.
Wrap-Up / At the end of our discussion, I will tell my students that my wish for them is to choose a career that they love and that makes them feel happy, proud, and accomplished each and every day. If they think that teaching agriculture is the career for them, then I will speak with them about their opportunities.
