Free Cave Tours for Veterans, Current Military Members
and their Families on Veteran’s Day
Superintendent Andy Ferguson invites veterans, current members of the armed forces and their families to visit Great Basin National Park on Wednesday November 11 on Veteran’s Day. The park will offer free tours of Lehman Caves to U.S. military veterans and current members of the U.S. armed forces and their families.
On September 8, 2006, Department of the Interior Secretary, Dirk Kempthorne and Department of Agriculture Secretary, Mike Johanns announced that, beginning Veterans Day, November 11, 2006, all U.S. military and current members of the U.S. armed forces and their families would be admitted free-of-charge on Veteran’s Day to public lands managed by both the Department of Interior and the Department of Agriculture. Ferguson has added that this our way of saying “thank you.”
Cave tours are either 90 or 60 minutes in length. Four tours per day are available. The 90 minute tours occur at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The 60 minute tours occur at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Children under the age of 5 are not permitted on the 90 minute tours.
Cave tours are limited to 20 people per tour. To ensure a space, visitors may obtain tickets over the phone up to 30 days in advance. Tickets cannot be obtained over the phone on the same day as the tour. A maximum of 20 spaces per tour are available for advance reservation. You may get tickets in advance by calling (775) 234-7331 extension 212. Phone orders are taken from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time, Monday through Friday. Tickets may also be purchased in person at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center.
Cave tours follow paved trails with stair steps along the route. Low ceilings may require frequent stooping. Trails may be wet and slippery. Wear shoes with good traction. The cave is 50 degrees Fahrenheit and 90 % humidity. Jackets are recommended. Cell phones, backpacks, purses, fanny packs, food, gum, tobacco, and water are not permitted on cave tours.
