Proclamation

National Day of Prayer:

May 5, 2016

WHEREAS, the National Day of Prayer is a longtime tradition first ordained by the Continental Congress in 1775. The National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 by a joint Resolution of the United States Congress and the Resolution was signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. It is fitting and proper that this day be observed in O’Fallon, Missouri as a period when all may express gratitude to God for our many blessings and our blessed freedoms; and

WHEREAS, at a time in our nation’s history when the power of prayer is needed more than ever, it is fitting that we publicly seek blessings for America and our community. We must pray for our brave soldiers and their families, for those devastated by natural disasters, and for our comrades; and

WHEREAS, since 1988 when the law was amended and signed by President Ronald Reagan, the National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. There is power in prayer and we can find comfort and guidance in the grace of a loving God. God is our strength and comfort in troubled and difficult times; and

WHEREAS, our theme for 2016 is Wake Up America, emphasizing the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to place their faith in the unfailing character of their Creator, who is sovereign over all government, authorities, and men. To further highlight our theme, we’ve chosen Isaiah 58:1a as our Scripture for this year: “Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.”

NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Hennessy, Mayor and the Council members of the City of O’Fallon, Missouri, do hereby proclaim the date of May 5, 2016

“A Day of Prayer”

in the City of O’Fallon and urge all citizens to observe the day by joining members of all faiths to seek divine guidance for ourselves, our leaders, and our City.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed this 19th Day of April, 2016.

______

Bill Hennessy, Mayor
