Napier Hill Press: Procedures for authors

If you have an idea for a book or other publication that you think would fit our set of publications, please make contact with the NHP directors (Catherine Adams and Jacqueline Gaile) via

Email:

Or phone at: 07495573347

We will then be able to discuss the nature of your work and assess if it is something that we all want to move forward with. There will then be a first editorial meeting or virtual meeting in which we can discuss your vision of your work. At this meeting, or if a meeting cannot be held, via correspondence, we will ask you to fill out a New Author Submission Form. You will need to provide information on this form, including:

  • The background and experience of you and your co-authors (include other works that you have published)
  • The potential market for your work and your perceptions of its contribution to the field
  • The proposed title and content of your new work and itsassociatedresearch
  • Your views on how many copies are likely to sell and on the price of the work

You will have the opportunity to ask us about our own business and make a judgement about whether you wish your work to be published through us. We will ask your views on how you would like your work to look. It will be useful to have a look around at other publications for examples on how you would like your work presented.

We may ask experts within the field to review the book/other publication proposition. We will not show your work to other people without your permission, but we may show them a sample of work and your submission form. If you are proposing a work that you have not already written, then we will ask you to submit a full outline and a sample chapter/section. We will seek advice from experts within the field as to whether the publication fits our own remit and is likely to find a market. We may seek reviews of your work to use in publicity and/or on the book cover/website.

When we have all this information and have had a chance to discuss it with you in person, we will then make a decision about whether to offer you a publication contract or not. Once you have signed the contract, the editorial process will begin.

NHP Editorial Process

The author(s) submit a completed manuscript to NHP, using agreed software for the submission of manuscripts. It is very important to note that this is the final point at which author changes to the content of the manuscript can be made. We recommend that you print out and check/proof read everything you send at this stage. It will be possible to make very small corrections later on but no substantive changes will be possible – for example, wording of paragraphs/sentences or addition/deleting material cannot be done.

The NHP editor will confer with the NHP designer regarding overall look and specification for the text and other visual material to be contained within the publication.

An editorial meeting/discussion will take place soon after submission with the author(s) and the editor at which the NHP editor will set out any changes required to the author’s manuscript. Samples of any fonts or artwork will be shown to the authors to approve/discuss. Examples of the book covers will normally be available for discussion also. Please note, however, that the responsibility for final decisions about the overall presentation of the work lies with the publisher.

We will then instruct the designer to complete the final version of the manuscript. This process will include final design of the front cover, inside verso and recto pages, list of contents, main body of text, all tables and figures, pictures, reference list, appendices, an index(if appropriate) and the back cover. We will liaise with you during this process if you or we have any questions or concerns.

The work will then be produced as a publisher’s proof. The proofs will be read by our own proof-reader and a list of proofing queries generated. These proofs and queries will be returned to you and you will need to mark them with any minor corrections that you need as well as responding to all the queries.

Our designer will update the returned proofs before going back to the printer for final production and proof-reading in-house.

The NHP Directors are here to assist you in any way and we hope that we aim to work as a team to bring your work to the market.
