Naperville Care Executive Contends that Need for more

home aides will challenge long-term care for seniors

The National Center for Health Statistics estimates that those receiving long-term care will rise from 14 million to 27 million by 2050. Since most seniors in long-term care prefer to remain at home, there is a growing demand for home aides.

To help keep pace, there are 4,500 franchised home care entities in the U.S., making it one of the fastest growing businesses in the franchise industry. One of the most successful is Naperville's in-home caregiving business, Assisting Hands Home Care.

“As the baby boomer generation continues to age, the need for cost-effective, in-home caregivers is expected to grow. This is reflected in data from the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which noted that in 2009, the home healthcare market reached $72.2 billion,” said Richard Ueberfluss, a physical therapist and president of Assisting Hands-Naperville, who has successfully franchised his home care business in the Chicago area.

Ueberfluss notes that while physician care is critical, seniors need continued supervision at home, especially if family caregivers can’t always be present. Assisting Hands, for example, staffs its operation with private duty professional caregivers who work in the home. Caregivers can include nurses, therapists, nursing aides, homemakers, and companions. Caregivers are typically Certified Nursing Assistants and complete an 8-week certification program. Illinois requires 8 hours of initial caregiving training as well, which includes Home Safety Evaluation, Infection Control and Universal Precaution, Types of Disabilities, Transferring a client, Assisting with Personal Care, Diets, Meal Planning and nutrition, Caring for the diabetic client, Caring for the Alzheimer’s client, Elder Abuse,Medications, Housekeeping Duties, Verbal and Written Communication, Assertiveness and Time Management, Cultural Diversity. Assisting Hands caregivers receive additional focused training in Fall prevention, Hospice anddementia communication by local experts. Assisting Hands caregivers also are bonded and are certified in CPR, First Aid and fall prevention.

“The franchise market for home aides grows daily as the population continues to age, and along with it, the need for long-term home care. So franchising a home care business reflects changing demographic patterns and changes in health management,” concludes Ueberfluss.
