Catalogue description: ESL 70 is the grammar/writing component of Level 3 of the ESL program. Students will build on grammar/writing skills of Level 2, writing and revising paragraphs and short narrative and descriptive compositions with clear introductions, support and conclusions. Grammar will include review of all simple and progressive verb tenses and the construction of compound and complex sentences

Weaving it Together 3: Connecting Reading and Writing

Recommended: Longman’s Dictionary of American English

Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Write short compositions (200-300 words) and responses to readings which demonstrate emerging fluency in English.

2. Write simple, compound, and complex sentences, using simple and progressive, present, past and future verb forms.

Objectives Successful students in this course will:

1. Correctly use simple and progressive, present, past, and future verb forms.

2. Recognize and understand the present perfect verb tense.

3. Correctly use selected modal auxiliaries including can, could, should, may, and might.

4. Apply the rules of subject/verb agreement.

5. Construct compound sentences with coordinate conjunctions, and complex sentences with

select subordinators.

6. Compose paragraphs with clear topic sentences and relevant supporting details.

7. Demonstrate knowledge of the writing process, including drafting, revising, and editing.

8. State and support an opinion in a clear paragraph.

Grading Policy: Students will earn a letter grade (A, B, C, D, or F) based on their performance in the following areas.

  1. Writing assignments 40%
  2. Grammar Tests 20%
  3. Verb quizzes 10%
  4. Weekly journal 10%
  5. Final exam 20%

Grading Scale:A = 90 - 100 %

B = 80 - 89 %

C= 70-79%

D=60-69%

F = below 60%

Attendance and classroom etiquette:

  • In order to be successful class, you need to be present and ready to learn. Regular attendance is required. If you have more than three absences, you may be dropped from the class. If you are absent the day of a test, you must arrange with me to take the test in the Tutoring and Testing Center before the next class meeting. The Tutoring and Testing Center is located on the second floor of the McCarthy Library.
  • Respect the learning process and your classmates at all times. This includes listening when someone else is speaking.
  • Turn off your cell phone before you enter the classroom. If you have a legitimate reason to keep your phone on, please let me know, and set your phone to the vibration mode.
