Names of Plants
Study the formal and informal classification of plants. Also know the hierarchy of formal classification and be able to identify comparative levels as either specific or general. Be able to explain why Latin is used as the standard language of plant nomenclature.
Terms: Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.
A plant variety is created by natural forces and produces plants that are recognizably different.
A cultivar is created through propagation methods that can be repeated by other plant growers. By using cultivation methods, a different type of plant is produced.

Turfgrass and Groundcovers
You should study and know the landscape value of grasses and groundcovers.
Be able to identify grasses used in full or partial sunlight; used in Asian gardens; used to top dress dormant grasses; used as a standard the turfgrass industry.
Be able to recognize the names of cool and warm season grasses.
Names and Terms:
Common and hybrid Bermuda grasses
St. Augustine grass
Korean or Zoysia grass
Bentgrass
Tall fescue grass
Ryegrass
Kentucky Bluegrass
Tap roots, succulent root, fibrous root, aerial root, and adventitious root.
Turfgrass Installation
You should know the standard used to establish seeding rates. Know what components are found in a seed mixture.
Be able to list the methods used to install turf grass and groundcovers. Also know the advantages and disadvantage of each one.
Know where each is commonly used in a landscape.

Turfgrass Maintenance
Know the fertilizer percentages and ratios used for turfgrasses in southern California.
Know the best months to use full fertilizer applications on turfgrass in southern California.
Be able to identify the season for maximum and minimum turfgrass heights.
Be able to list methods used to broadcast seeds and granular fertilizers.
Know the styles, weaknesses, and strengths of mowers used to cut cool and warm season grasses.
What factor increases the maneuverability of a lawnmower?
Be able to identify methods used to either delay grass dormancy or to create a green lawn in the winter.
Be able to identify the steps involved in mowing a lawn such as cut patterns, mowing frequency, and cutting resistance.
Be able to explain how to prepare a soil before installing turfgrass or groundcovers.

Know the different types of pipe fittings and the reason they are used.
Be able to identify the specifications used to classify irrigation nozzles.
Be able to identify the factors that reduce water pressure as water moves from the street to the back yard.
Be able to name the specification used to space raisers and nozzles in a landscape.
Be able to identify the different components of a trickle irrigation system.
Explain how to measure the amount of water released by an irrigation system over a measured period of time.
Know what you measure when plotting an irrigation system.
