Nominated Program:

The 2002 School Environmental Challenge Awards project, running from January 2002 to January 2003, achieved its goals and objectives with 234 schools nationwide receiving funds for their projects from the Honda Group of Companies in Thailand. Every school completed its project under the monitoring and academic advice of local committees, comprising representatives of major organizations.

Ban Ngew Mai School, Terng District, Chiang Rai Province won His Majesty the King’s Cup for its Full Cycle Agriculture for Environmental Preservation project and has been designated as the winner of the School Environmental Challenge Awards in Thailand so as to be the model school for environmental development in the future. The Ban Ngew Mai School was selected for many reasons: its creation of 11 learning activities which allows students to think, analyze and voluntarily implement the tasks; its success in generating cooperation within the community to hand down local wisdom, for example, learning the value of the local herbs and how to grow them; learning about methods and equipment for catching shrimps and eels, and the life cycle and ecology of local insects, e.g. Gwang. In addition, various learning bases such as the ecology of field crabs will help solve the problem of using chemical substances to eliminate the crabs in rice fields.
