Contribution to Dialogue
See the distinction between dialogue and debate. / Is completely focused on the discussion of the seminar, asks questions at appropriate times, / Is generally focused on the discussion, asks questions (which poorly timed), does not actually contribute to the dialogue, rather makes superficial or unrelated comments or simply restates the ideas of others. / Is easily distracted from discussion, asks questions at inappropriate times (interrupting other speakers), attempts to participate in discussion. / Makes no attempt to focus on discussion by having side conversations or working on another task, does not ask questions, tries to debate rather than dialogue with other seminar participants
Questions / Questions are engaging and open-ended, following the teacher models. Questions are aimed at understanding what the text means, and encourage higher-order thinking skills. / Questions are generally insightful, but may include some of the “right or wrong” type. Questions may attempt to aim at understanding text, but might not encourage higher-order thinking skills. / Questions show little thought or insight. They fail to engage the inner circle in discussion, rather tending to have a “right or wrong” answer. Questions may be incomplete. / Student provided little or no questions. If a few were provided, they have right or wrong answer and do not encourage thinking skills or discussion on the inner-circle.

Grading: Each criterion is given a grade on a 0-100 scale. All three are averaged together to get the Outer Circle score. This score is then averaged with the Inner Circle score to get the Total Discussion Grade.
