Question 18 of 22
Ben Franklin
Benjamin Franklin is one of the most famous citizens of the United States. He is remembered as the man who flew a kite during a lightning storm to conduct an experiment about electricity. He was the American ambassador to France during the Revolutionary War. He was also an inventor, and one of his most practical inventions was the Franklin stove.
In colonial homes, fireplaces were the source of heat. Unfortunately, most of the heat went up the chimney with the smoke. The stove Franklin invented stood in the middle of the room with a stove pipe to remove the fumes. Because the stove was made out of a heavy iron box with a door, it gave off heat from all sides. The stove remained warm even after the wood and coal had burned completely. In this way, the stove would continue to be a source of heat, even after the fire died out. People still use the Franklin stove.
If you are worried about your wooden floor catching fire, why might you feel safer with a Franklin stove than a fireplace?
/ A. / The stove is made of a metal box with a door.
/ B. / The stove sits in the middle of the room.
/ C. / The chimney absorbs most of the heat.
/ D. / The stove stays warm even after the fire goes out.

Question 21 of 22
The Feudal System
Just as we have different social classes today—the rich, the middle-class, the poor—Europe had them hundreds of years ago during the Middle Ages. From 700 A.D. to 1200 A.D., Europe’s society was known as the feudal system. In that system, power was divided unfairly among all those who lived in the land.
At the top of the social order were the kings. Kingdoms were spread all over Europe. Each king owned all the land in his kingdom. The king had control over all who lived there.
Soon Vikings began to invade Europe. The king needed help to defend his kingdom. He turned to the men who lived in his land. He asked them to swear their loyalty to him and to fight to save the kingdom. In return for their allegiance, the king gave these men titles and a part of the kingdom. These nobles—or the king’s landowners—quickly grew wealthy and gained power over the peasants, or the common people.
Nobles or lords held different levels of power or importance. A lesser noble was known as the vassal to a higher noble or lord. In other words, vassals were important men who swore loyalty to and took orders from those who were richer and more powerful than they. For example, one lord might have many vassals who serve under him. The same lord might himself be a vassal to a lord of higher rank. Ultimately, all lords served as vassals to the king.
Determine the main idea from the passage.
/ A. / All lords served as vassals to the king during the Middle Ages.
/ B. / Europe had different social classes during the Middle Ages.
/ C. / The king gave men titles during the Middle Ages.
/ D. / Nobles held different levels of power or importance.
