N331 Case Study #2: Pregnancy

Anna and Paul, both 32 years old, just found out that they are going to have their first child. Anna is 5 weeks pregnant.

Anna is 67 inches tall (without shoes), her pre-pregnancy weight was 126# (in indoor clothing), and her frame size is medium. Her hematocrit is 30%, hemoglobin is 12 g/dl, and her serum iron level is 45 mcg/dl.

Both Anna and Paul run about 2 miles, 4 days a week. Neither of them are smokers. They have a glass of wine with dinner. Anna plans to breastfeed the baby.

Anna is concerned about gaining too much weight. She is worried about additives in foods that may harm the fetus. She is taking 5 grams of vitamin C daily that she believes is helpful for cold prevention, but no other supplements.

tomatoes, alfalfa sprouts, handful of nuts)
