ESL LinguaFolio Pilot Project

Class Description: Questions & Answers

1. Which class(es) did you decide to pilot the ESL LinguaFolio with?

I am going to pilot the ESL LinguaFolio with my entire class of 18 third grade German Immersion students. We are going to use just in the content area of German Language Arts which is held daily for 1 hour each day.

15 students are performing at or above a third grade level in German Reading Fluency, Text Comprehension, and Writing Skills.

3 students are struggling in all three areas. They are more consistent with a beginning of year second grade level.

2. How would you describe your students in the piloting class?

I have 8 boys and 10 girls.

The youngest student will be 8 years old in December while the oldest student will be 10 in April.

One student missed German kindergarten and entered the immersion program in first grade. This has had a negative impact on this student’s vocabulary and comprehension of oral and written German. This student wishes to learn more German this year in order to learn her content in the core subjects to pass third grade.

Three students have one parent that speaks German at home. One parent has both parents that speak German at home. The remaining 14 students have no German-speaking parents. Of those students, five students do have an older sibling in the home that is also learning German.

Three students go to tutoring once a week after school to work on their German reading and writing skills.

3. What was, or what do you think will be, your students’ initial reaction to the ESL LinguaFolio project?

I will be introducing it next week. I am excited about it; therefore, I anticipate that they will be excited about it. I wanted to do this particularly for those students that I described above as being below grade level. I think that when they can reflect on paper about what they are capable of doing in German they will be proud and motivated to learn even more.

Implementation Plans

Please share how you decided to house ESL LinguaFolio for your students by completing the “On Paper” section:

On Paper

1. How?I will use individual manila folders for each student.
