IMMEDIATE ACTION

In the event on an incident while running a <activity> program the following protocol will be used:

1.  Take Charge / Secure the Scene. Ensure the rest of the group are taken care of (preferably by an experienced guide or leader), especially those who are on the pitch or near the edge.

2.  Provide First Aid to your level of training. Follow DRABC, shock management and perform a secondary survey to provide a good idea of the condition of the patient.

Exposure Is there any risk from the elements – wind, heat, water

3.  Assessment: Non-serious injury - Patient does not need urgent medical care.

§  Patient is Ambulatory. Preferred option is to self-rescue. Walk the patient to the nearest vehicle access, <summarise the nearest vehicle access>.

§  Patient is Not Ambulatory. Preferred option is to self-rescue. We will attempt to transport the patient to the nearest vehicle access, <summarise the nearest vehicle access and any site specific issues relating to getting a casualty to the nearest vehicle access>.

4.  Assessment: Serious injury - Patient needs urgent medical care.

§  Using the <emergency communications equipment> the police will be contacted. They will organise for outside assistance to evacuate the patient. While waiting for assistance, provide the best care possible to your level of training.

§  When you contact the police you need to make sure you provide:

a.  Exact location of you and your patient(s) – Nearest road junction is <put nearest road junction here>

b.  The condition of your patient. The more detail the better.

c.  Your telephone number – put phone number here

d.  Any knowledge you have of easy access to your location. <Add details here>

5.  Management

·  Reassure your patient.

·  Use the other staff members to reassure the rest of the group.

·  When appropriate keep the group informed of the patient's condition.

·  Debrief the incident as soon as is appropriate.

·  Complete First Aid forms, incident forms and witness reports as soon as practically possible.
