Expectations and Grades:

As you can imagine, grading artwork is very different from grading a math quiz or English paper. The right and wrong answers are not always clear; therefore I have devised a grading system for each project that breaks down the assignment into many different objectives. For example, if the unit’s lesson is about the principle of movement, an assignment might be to create a sculpture of a figure that gives the illusion of being in motion.

A grading rubric for this assignment might look like this:

*60% Projects

*20% In-Class Sketchbook assignments

*10% Bellringers

*10% Clean up-Supply Care

Classroom Rules

SAFETY – our number one concern. Students are expected to handle all materials and tools with utmost care. Tools and materials can be dangerous, heavy and expensive. We don’t want anyone hurt. In order to be trusted with the potentially dangerous materials, you must first prove that you can be trusted with the harmless tools. Much of this equipment is also expensive.

1.  RESPECT – Your teacher, your classmates, your studio, and your self.

2.  FOLLOW DIRECTIONS – Since sculpture is a hands-on studio class, you will find that I will not be talking very much on a daily basis, but when I do, it is extremely important.

3.  NO FOOD, DRINK, OR GUM – Art studios have chemicals and particles that are unhealthy to ingest. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Classroom Procedures

Daily Routine: Entering/Leaving

1.  Backpacks and belongings will be kept in the backpack bin.

2.  Students will promptly collect the materials needed for the class and sit in their assigned seat.

3.  Students should stay in their seat unless they are collecting necessary materials or using the sink.

4.  I will give a ten minute warning for cleanup at the end of class.

TEXTBOOKS: Textbooks will be kept in the classroom and used as needed.

HOMEWORK: Weekly sketchbook entries will be assigned. However, an artist always works in their sketchbook!

HALL PASSES: Hall passes will be handed out by the teacher accordingly, with only one student out at a time.

SEATING: Assigned seating will be established and can change when needed.

DRESS ACCORDINGLY: Studio art is MESSY! Keep this in mind when getting dressed in the morning.

Above all, this class should be an enjoyable, enriching experience. In order for students to earn the privilege of using art materials and working in a studio environment, they must follow the rules and understand that while many of the projects are fun and hands-on, art class is NOT playtime.

It is my hope that students will learn to enjoy art at many different levels. Many students approach this class with the attitude of “I can’t draw!” The solution to this is that if a student is willing to learn, I can teach them! My grading is not based on how talented a student comes into my class, but on the effort and overall improvement at whatever level.
