Course Description and Overview of Content / In this course we will be covering the following topics: chemical bonds, matter, the periodic table, atomic structure, chemical reactions, behavior of gases, and acids and bases. We will be using a variety of different learning methods and activities including laboratories, hands-on activities, current news, inquiry-based activities among other things.
Course Goal/ Intended Outcomes / By the end of this course, students will have a solid background in chemistry. This will include an awareness of themselves and the world around them. Chemistry also provides an opportunity to grow in scientific literacy so that our students may succeed in today’s society.
Texts and/ or Other Materials Needed / The text used for this course is Living By Chemistry. There is only a classroom set of textbooks so you will not be able to take the textbook home. In addition to the text, students will need to bring basic materials such as a notebook/loose leaf paper, writing utensil, and folder/binder to class each day. Most other materials will be provided.
Format and Activities / Students will be expected to come to class prepared each day with required materials. Homework will be assigned frequently and will need to be completed on time. Daily lessons will vary in style, content, and manner in which they are taught.
Our daily classes will connect to learner’s prior knowledge, provide new information, provide opportunities for guided and independent practice, and application. Occasionally projects will be assigned for students to apply the concepts learned in a new way
Grading Practices and Procedures / Grading Scale:
93% - 100% A 80% - 82% B 67% --- 69% D+
90% - 93% A- 77% - 79% C+ 63% - 67% D
87% - 89% B+ 73% --- 77% C 60% - 62% D-
83% - 86% B 70% --- 72% C- 0% - 59% E
I will grade on a straight percentage scale based on total points. Throughout the semester you will have many assignments, tests, papers, labs, etc. Each will be given a point value. At the end of the semester your points that you’ve earned will be divided by points possible to give a percentage. This percentage determines your grade.
The semester grade is determined in the following manner:
➢Term 126.7%
➢Term 226.7%
➢Term 3 26.6%
➢Semester Exam20%
Each semester, a cumulative FINAL EXAM will be given that is worth 20% of your grade. Extra credit is not something to depend on to make up for poor grades or missed homework. Generally speaking, extra credit will rarely, if ever, be given.\
Late Work: Assignments lose 10% each day they are late for up to five days. No late assignments will be accepted after the second day.
ReTests:
Students will be allowed one retest within a one week period of time after the original test was given. No extra credit is given on retests.
Grade Posting / You will be kept aware of what your standing grade is throughout the semester. Grades are cumulative and will be posted on a regular basis. You need to check your grade using student vue, not by asking the teacher. It is a good idea to keep your old homework and tests!!! Not only will it help you study for tests and the final exam, but if you think that a mistake was made in calculating your grade, you must have the assignment and/or test to help me correct the problem.
Attendance/ Tardiness Practices and Procedures / Students are expected to be in class on time on a daily basis in order to do well. Good attendance is recognized by every teacher and employer as a necessary requirement for quality work.
Absences:
If you are absent the day of a test, it must be made up within one week of the test date or a zero will be entered for the test grade. AN ABSENCE THE DAY BEFORE THE TEST DAY DOES NOT EXCUSE YOU FROM TAKING THE TEST ON THE SCHEDULED DATE! TEST DATES WILL GENERALLY BE ANNOUNCED ONE WEEK AHEAD. Whenever you are absent, it is solely your responsibility to keep up with the class. Some activities simply cannot be made up. Missed videos, labs, class discussions, etc. are often impossible to do outside of the regular class setting. ATTENDANCE IS CRUCIAL!!!!!
If an absence is unexcused, you will not receive credit for homework turned in that day or assignments assigned on that day. SLEEPING IN CLASS WILL RESULT IN AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE. If an absence is excused, you will have the number of days you were absent +1, to make up assignments. See your student handbook for details.
Tardies: Getting to class on time is expected every day with all required materials. A student is considered tardy if she/he is not in his/her seat when the tardy bell rings. Therefore, standing outside the door and rushing in as the bell rings constitutes a tardy. Please refer to the student handbook for more information about the tardy policy.
Classroom Rules and Procedures / Students are expected to come to class with the purpose of learning. Students who fail to bring required materials to class will receive a tardy. Students are asked to be open-minded, flexible, and to participate each day to the best of their ability. Any activity detracting from the learning activity will not be tolerated. Students who act irresponsibly (not observing the safety rules) during laboratory activities will be removed from the lab and lose that portion of their grade.
Hall Passes: Hall passes are for emergencies only. It is advisable that students use the passing time to attend to their personal needs. Students must wait until lessons are completed before asking to leave the classroom for any reason. The teacher has the right to tell a student NO if hall passes are being abused.

Technology Usage

/ Online web activities will be occasionally assigned. Chromebooks will be made available during these times. Cell phones are expected to be turned off and out of the teachers sight during class. At no time will students be allowed to use social media or texting during class. Please refrain from texting your child during school.
