Oct.18, 8th edition
It definitely does not feel like the middle of October. I cannot wait for the leaves to change, warm clothes and the crisp, cool air. Here is what is going on this week:
Social Studies
5th Grade Social Studies
We took our test on Monday and will be moving on to ch.3. Chapter 3 is about ancient civilizations, such as the Aztecs and Mayans. Some students started the flashcards for ch.3 already during their study hall time.
6th Grade Social Studies
This week we will be talking about Earth’s human and cultural geography. We will be discussing how technology has played an important role in globalization. Monday we watched the music video, “We are the World” and we will be discussing Bono from U2 to discuss issues of social justice. I am sure we will have a great discussion. Many students did not know that people are literally starving to death in parts of the world.
Religion
5th Grade Religion
This week our focus is on the Beatitudes, chapter 3. On their test next week, the students will have to know the Beatitudes. They will not have to write the entire list out. I will have a fill-in-the-blank portion on the test. We will be working on breaking down the Beatitudes into what they mean for us today.
6th Grade Religion
We will continue to learn about different covenants God has promised. Monday we watched a clip from Evan Almighty and looked closely at a picture in our book to decide what Noah was feeling about building the Ark. Would we be open like Noah? We will also be discussing the big picture of what do these covenants have to do with us today?
5A Math
We are discussing area of shaded regions this week. We will not be having a quiz this week because we will be taking a Diocesan test. We will be also ordering decimals that are very similar. If you have multiplication flashcards at home, please quiz your child a few times a week. We have been taking timed tests at school also. We are trying to become more fluent with our facts.
Strategy Applications
5th Strategy Applications
The 5th graders are writing a summary of the article, “Alien Cover-Up?” We are using a summarizing strategy that lays the entire summary out so that it is easier to put together simply. It will take a little work to get used to, but once they get the hang of it, it will be smooth sailing. This strategy can be used for the rest of their academic life.
6A Strategy Applications
The 6th graders will also be summarizing the article” Navajo Code Talkers.” Wednesday we will be watching a video clip on the code talkers and will be learning strategies for taking notes.
