Reading:
This week we will continue our Launching unit. In this unit, the students will get exposure to various types of texts (fiction, nonfiction, and poetry). Throughout this unit, the students will also be reflecting on themselves as readers and learning strategies (making connections, using context clues, determining importance, etc.) to help them better comprehend what they read. A new vocabulary list for the week was sent home today. The students should study the words on the list and be prepared for a quiz on Friday. On the quiz, the students will be given sentences in which they have to choose the correct vocabulary word to place in the blank and complete the sentence.
Writing/Language:
This week in writing we will continue our unit on How Writers Work. Throughout this unit, the students will be introduced to several texts and discuss how the authors of the text work through their writing. The students will also reflect on themselves as writers and learn tips for improving their writings. The students received their first spelling list today. The students should make sure they can spell the words on the list and other words that follow the same spelling patterns. The students will take a spelling test on Thursday. The students will either receive an S or an N on the test which will be considered with their spelling within their writings to determining their final spelling grade for the nine weeks. The spelling within their writings will be weighed more heavily than their spelling tests.
