Day 1 Instructional Activities:
3rd Grade Resource Reading:
  • Review literature skills on answering questions, characters, setting, point of view, and different kinds of stories
  • Use powerpoint to review fables, folktales, myths, legends, and fairy tales: Myths, Folktales, Fables and Fairytales - brief description of each
  • Review character traits – something that describes the personality of a character, and setting – where the story takes place
  • Define and discuss point of view: first-person and third-person
  • Read “The Tiger, the Wolf, and the Fox” and answer questions about characters, setting, point of view and genre of story.
  • Writing Activity – (2 short answer questions) How do you know what kind of passage this is? and How would this story be different if Reynard were the narrator?

  • Review Comparing and Contrasting Literature by the same author
  • Review definitions: compare - telling how things are alike, contrast- telling how things are different
  • Authors often write stories about the same characters –Ex. Sarah, Plain, and Tall – Skylark
  • Read aloud Chicken Sunday and then listen to The Keeping Quilt at both by Patricia Polacco
  • Writing Activity - Students work with partners to complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the two stories by Patricia Polacco. Compare and contrast main ideas, themes, characters, setting, plots, style, etc.
  • view a completed Venn diagram comparing and contrasting Chicken Sunday and The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco
  • Homework - Read two passages by Rosemary Brennan – “One Saturday Morning” and “The Green Wand”- answer questions on characters, setting, point of view, genre, problem/solution, illustrations, etc. , short answer question - Explain how the themes of “One Saturday Morning” and “The Green Wand” are alike and different.

  • Informational Texts - Review main idea, text organization, text features, and comparing/contrasting informational texts

  • Review organizational patterns – sequence, cause & effect, compare contrast, and view samples of each pattern
  • View powerpoint to review text features – headings, bold print, photo captions, etc.
  • Read “Bears” and answer questions on main idea, organizational patterns, & text features
  • Writing activity – (2 short answers) Pretend you are writing a report comparing and contrasting pandas and grizzlies. Your report needs to include what they look like, where they live, and what they eat. Think about how you would organize this report and write your title and three headings.

  • Review parts of stories, dramas, and poem. Define and review terms such as chapter, scene, and stanza.

  • Discuss and view various poems, plays, chapter books, etc. to identify chapters, scenes, and stanzas.
  • Read poem The Truth About the Dragon’s Tooth (Ready Common Core Instruction) and answer questions about the poem,
  • Writing activity – What happens in Stanza 7 that explains why the giant has appeared. Use details from the poem to support your answer.
