Mr. Chairman/President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a special honor for me to welcome all the participants of this conference in Debrecen. For the University of Debrecen, it is indeed a privilege to act as host for this prestigious event. As I have been informed by the organizers, there are more than 200 participants currently present here from as many as 41 different countries altogether, representing the most excellent research groups and institutions of onomastics worldwide. We are proud to consider this fact as a special professional distinction; an acknowledgment of the quality of the academic work accomplished for the past decades in the Department of Hungarian Linguistics of our Faculty of the Humanities. For the University of Debrecen, the academic and research activities pursued in its various institutes and departments have always been regarded to be of outstanding significance, while this work and the related achievements have also been highly acclaimed internationally in several fields, including that of linguistic studies.

Concerning its size, the University of Debrecen belongs to the international average, yet it is also one of the few true universities in the sense that it covers almost the entire spectrum of scholarly-scientific activities and higher education. We offer programs in fields ranging from medicine to arts, from agriculture to law, and from information science to humanities, many of which are highly acclaimed internationally, of which fact we are really proud. Our academic programs in agriculture and pharmacy are currently ranked among the top two hundred in the world, while the ones in medicine and biology belong to the top three hunded. In the field of humanities, it is exactly the study of linguistics that is rated to be among the best even internationally.

Apart from achieving academic recognition, the strategic priorities for our university also include the establishment and the maintenance of an international network of connections, in which respect we can look back upon a long history of several centuries. Ever since Debreceni Református Kollégium [Reformed College of Debrecen], of which we are the legal successors, was founded almost five hundred years ago, in 1538, we have sustained and cherished continuous connections with spiritual centers and universities in Western Europe, especially with Protestant universities and colleges. If you care to cast a glance at the stained-glass windows of our Aula, you will surely notice and recognize the images of universities in Utrecht, Zurich, Wittenberg, and Geneva, dating back to the 17th and 18th, or the 19th centuries. The same way, there is, to this very day, a relief plaque on one of the walls of the University of Utrecht, commemorating the peregrinating students of old from Debrecen. However, the current network of international relations the University of Debrecen belongs to is much broader.

I sincerely believe that this current event, just like the previous 25 conferences, will be crowned with success, producing impressive results and generating new professional connections in a pleasant atmosphere and among agreeable conditions. I wish you all the best and hope that you will have a good time in Debrecen, at the University of Debrecen.

Tisztelt Elnök úr, Tisztelt Konferencia!

Tisztelettel köszöntöm a konferencia valamennyi résztvevőjét. Egyetemünk számára megtisztelő, hogy otthont adhat ennek a rangos eseménynek. A szervezők tájékoztatása szerint 41 országból több mint 200 résztvevő és előadó érkezett Debrecenbe, valamennyien a névtudomány kiváló kutatói. Talán nem túlzás, ha ezt egyfajta szakmai elismerésnek is tekintjük: annak az évtizedek óta folyó tudományos munkának az elismerése, amely a BTK Nyelvtudományi Intézetében folyik. A DE számára kiemelkedően fontosak az egyetem tudományos műhelyei, amelyek számos tudományterületen, így a nyelvészetben is nemzetközi ismertségűek.

A DE – nemzetközi viszonylatban közepes méretei mellett – azok közé az egyetemek közé tartozik, amelyek lefedik a tudomány és a felsőoktatás szinte egészét. Az orvostudománytól a művészetig, az agrártudománytól a jogtudományig, az informatikától a bölcsészettudományokig folyik nálunk képzés és kutatás, és ezek közül sok olyan van, amelyet a nemzetközi tudományosságban is számon tartanak, amelyekre büszkék vagyunk. Jelenleg is a top 200-ba sorolják az agrár és a gyógyszerész képzésünket, az orvosképzést és a biológiát a legjobb 300-ba. A bölcsészettudományok területén éppen a nyelvészet az egyik olyan, amelyet nemzetközi mércével is a legjobbak között jegyeznek.

A tudományos elismertség mellett egyetemünk stratégiájának prioritásai közé tartozik az a nemzetközi kapcsolatrendszer, amely több évszázados múltra tekinthet vissza. A Debreceni Református Kollégium – amelynek jogutódja vagyunk – közel fél évezreddel ezelőtti (1538-as) megalapítása óta folyamatos, megszakítás nélküli kapcsolatokat ápolunk Nyugat Európa protestáns spirituális központjaival és egyetemeivel. Ha feltekintünk az Aula ólomüveg ablakaira, láthatjuk a 17-18. vagy 19. századi utrechti, zürichi, wittenbergi, genfi egyetemek képeit, csakúgy, mint ahogyan például az utrechti egyetem falán ma is megtalálható bronz dombormű őrzi a hajdani debreceni peregrinus diákok emlékét. A mai Debreceni Egyetem nemzetközi kapcsolatrendszere természetesen már jóval kiterjedtebb.

Remélem, hogy a korábbi 25 konferenciához méltó színvonalon és körülmények között, jó hangulatban, a tudomány számára eredményeket, új szakmai kapcsolatokat hozva zajlik majd a konferencia. hasznos eszmecserét kívánok, érezzék jól magukat Debrecenben, a Debreceni Egyetemen!
