Notes in respect of table contents: The railway traffic information that appears in this table detailscommodities that move over this route (the Maputo Corridor) or part of it. This includes high volumes of traffic between Phalaborwa (in Limpopo Province) and Richards Bay, running between Kaapmuiden and Komatipoort over a portion of the route and then through Swaziland. Such traffic also moves to Maputo while a small volume of import traffic moves from Maputo via Kaapmuiden to Beit Bridge and countries to the north.
Significant volumes of traffic are generated by various branch lines including the Steelpoort and Roossenekal lines. Some of this traffic is directed to Clewer, Middelburg and Witbank within Mpumalanga itself. Other traffic moves over the Richards Bay Coal line from Wonderfontein and Ogies, or the Witbank – Welgedag line into Gauteng and beyond to Durban and other points inland. For practical purposes, the short Hawerklip branch, which was constructed to exploit coal traffic, is considered to be part of the main line. Traffic from the Lothair branch (between Machadodorp and Ermelo) flows into the Richards Bay Coal Line and the Maputo Corridor and traffic details are included in both main line sections. Traffic originating on branch or other feeder lines is detailed as being forwarded (FWD) in the main line figures, although it is transit (bridge) traffic as it does not originate on the main line itself It is denoted with brackets but is also credited to the specific branch line. For the purpose of this study, “Bridge” traffic is that which is generated in one province and which transits Mpumalanga to another province.
Traffic generated in the North West Province flows into the route via Pyramid South in Gauteng to Balmoral and on to Richards Bay or Maputo.Other traffic from various provinces flows into Mpumalanga via Eloff over the section between Welgedag (in Gauteng) and Witbank.Significant tonnages of petroleum products (liquid fuel) flow from the coast and synfuel plants to a number of destinations in the province
This table details traffic forwarded from or received at specific stations within the province. Intrastate traffic is that which has been forwarded from one station in the province and received at another station in the province. Bridge traffic (also known as Transit traffic) is that which is generated on one province and which passes through Mpumalanga to another province.
Transnet Freight Rail have recently changed Commodity descriptions and groupings. For example, Rock Phosphate is now described under the heading of “Mining of Chemical and Fertilizer Minerals: while “Wood and Wood Products” now cover Pulpwood, Sawn Timber, and Wood Chips.” This makes it difficult in some cases to make comparisons with earlier statistical data. Another heading is “Not Listed as a Commodity.” It appears that this is for commodities which the TFR statisticians have not identified in their data collection exercises.
