MOUNTAIN SEAS ARTS (MSA)

ARTIST IN RESIDENCY PROGRAM • 2017

INFORMATION & APPLICATION
Create art in pristine wilderness--close to civilization yet remote and beautiful!

Are you a practicing artist working in the visual or performing arts? Mountain Seas is offering Artist in Residency (AIR) opportunities at their Flinders Island property, nestled between the mountains and the sea. Spend up to four weeks in nature's raw beauty, expressing yourself through your chosen artistic medium. Encounter nature in its freshness and power. Imagine stunning scenery with easy access to rugged wilderness, a well-equipped Arts Centre, and a cozy comfortable place to live. The Program is open to all types of artists including, but not limited to, painters, ceramicists, sculptors, writers, musicians, digital and mixed media artists. A residency allows the artist to experience the character of a place in great depth, inspiring a diverse range of rich and vibrant artistic interpretation. The act of art enhances the artist, the community, the muse, and the objects the artist perceives.
MSA ACCOMMODATION and LOCATION :
We are located on Flinders Island in Bass Strait, off the North-East coast of Tasmania, Australia. Mountain Seas has 40,000 acres of undeveloped national park on three sides. We have private trails accessing tall trees, fresh water streams, waterfalls, and sculptural granite boulders. The trailhead to the highest peak of Strzelecki Mountain begins one km from the property. The beaches, two kilometers from Mountain Seas, are among the best in the world. The white sandy beaches of Fotheringate and Trousers Point are featured in magazines such as Australian Geographic.
THE FACILITIES:
The Art Centre can host workshops in various mediums, and accommodate up to 20 people working in different ways in the available areas. The Art Centre is equipped with two ceramic wheels, an electric kiln, hand building tables, as well as a separate space for acrylic painting, watercolors, and other visual mediums.

The Dance Yurt is available for readings, musical and dance performances, and can accommodate up to 25 people.

THE MOUNTAIN SEAS ARTS ACCOMMODATION:

Mountain Seas offers either one of two living spaces dependent on availability. Occasionally, a move between locations is required, based on other occupancy:
A fully furnished self-contained Yurt containing one large living area with double bed, kitchenette and separate bathroom. Here you can experience nature and solitude at its best. The Yurt is close to the Art Centre and a 5 minute walk to the Retreat. This unit is more isolated than the facility at the Retreat.
A room with bathroom in the Mountain Seas Retreat and shared living/kitchen facilities. The kitchen for this unit is a shared kitchen. Samples of rooms can be seen on the website. “Rattan Warmth” is one of the primary rooms for AIR’s.

Our accommodation manager, Annie, also makes delicious frozen meals available for purchase by artists who wish to cook minimally.

Internet access and phone

Mobile phone connection is available via the Telstra 3G network; please note that your mobile may not work if you have a provider other than Telstra! There is limited and slow internet access; artists are strongly encouraged to bring their own dongle (USB wifi). If you rely on internet for artistic work, please bring a wifi unit; the island is a slow speed and expensive, so our downloads are limited.
AVAILABILITY
Residency at Mountain Seas is available from the beginning of April to the end of October. We encourage a minimum of 2 weeks stay; however your length of stay can vary from one week (minimum) up to 6 weeks (maximum).

• Residency is for one artist at the MS Retreat and the use of the nearby Art Centre.

In addition:

·  Mountain Seas is located in a remote area. It could be possible that no other artist is in residency during your stay here. Please inform yourself about Flinders Island prior to your application!

·  We operate a wilderness retreat. Please make sure you understand the implications of a remote retreat where the moon, stars (and your torch) may very well be the only guiding lights!

·  MSA operates a gallery on the premises. Please consider and discuss with the program coordinator a possible exhibition of your work here. We also are happy to hang work you may choose to leave here, on a commission basis.
