T-Ball Regular Season Rules

The Mount Jumbo Little League T-ball Program is a vehicle by which youngsters can practice and develop baseball skills at an early age and with maximum enjoyment. For the beginner, the learning experience must be fun, with ample opportunity to practice all the fundamentals of the sport: batting, throwing, fielding, and running. All players should be encouraged by managing personnel to do their best. T-Ball should be fun. If it isn't fun, it isn't Little League. To this end, games will be of a non-competitive nature, with the results being measured by participation, skills development, and improvement of baseball fundamentals.

Please remember that this is a developmental league. We encourage you to take into account that the children you are dealing with are very young and impressionable and are here to develop basic skills and have fun. It is the coaches' and parents' responsibility to maintain the focus of this program teaching fundamentals while maintaining a fun, healthy, and SAFE atmosphere.

  1. 1. COACH MISSION:

a) Teach your players something new each season

b) Be a role model for the players to look-up to.

c) Make sure the players have fun.

d) Keep the game moving! A fast-paced game is key to keeping the kids engaged.

  1. GAME START & STOP:

a) A full game shall consist of four (4) full innings. The only reason a game will be shortened is because of weather or darkness. ALL GAMES WILL END AFTER 1.0 HOURS OR AT 7:00PM.

b) Each team will be limited to five (5) runs or three (3) outs per inning. There will be NO WALKS - players are to hit the ball to advance to first base.

c) All games will begin at 6:00 p.m.

d) In the event of a rain-out, the HOME TEAM IS REQUIRED to contact the opposing coach to set up a different time for the game. Please contact your league director to check on field availability.

e) If the weather is not conducive to everyone having a positive experience, just call the other coach and reschedule the game for a different time. The primary consideration must be on the comfort of the players. It is not mandatory to get all the games in before the schedule ends. You can reschedule the game for the end of the season or the following week if necessary.

  1. PLAYERS & ADULTS:

a) All players should be rotated regularly.

b) Ten (10) players will play in the field at one time, with four (4) outfielders. If a team does not have a full roster of players present at the game, play the game with whatever number is there. If one team has a substantial number more than the other team, divide up the players.

c) At least one (1) coach MUST BE in the field to assist defensive players and at least one (1) coach MUST BE at home-plate to assist players on offense. It is highly recommended that more than one coach be present at all games to assist the players.

d) No parent shall participation as a player (i.e. playing in a position a child is supposed to play in). If your team is short, just play with the number of players you have at the game. No forfeits.

e) There shall be no arguments of outs or safe calls or any type of protest. Remember this is T-ball.

  1. BATTING - All players present for the game will be listed in the line-up, and will bat continuously in that order. Batters are not allowed to bunt or half-swing, but must take a full swing. The batter is allowed to take two (2) warm-up swings to get the bat and ball lined up before taking a full swing. Each batter will be allowed three (3) swings. If, on the third strike, the ball is not struck, the batter will be out and the next batter takes his/her place up to bat. If, on the third strike, the ball is fouled, the batter shall be entitled to another swing.
  1. PITCHING - The ball SHALL NOT be pitched. All at-bats will be hit off a tee which shall be set on home plate. The player who occupies the defensive position of pitcher must stay in contact with the pitching rubber until the ball is hit.
  1. BASE RUNNING - Run one base if ball is hit to the infield and two (2) bases when the ball is hit to the outfield. Runners must stay in contact with the base until the ball is hit (no lead off). When players have advanced as far as possible without being put out or retired, the batting team shall call "time" and get the next batter ready.
  1. OVERTHROWS - a player may not advance any extra bases on an overthrow.
  1. STEALING – stealing bases are not allowed until Majors, Juniors, Seniors divisions.
  1. SAFETY FIRST:

a) ONLY one (1) batter is allowed warm-up on his/her at-bat.

b) All catchers MUST WEAR a catcher’s mask, chest guard, and shin guards any time they step behind home plate on defense. (a catcher is not required in T-ball but may be used)

c) All base runners and batters MUST wear a protective batting helmet on their heads.

d) As our T-ball fields do not have dugouts, please have your players sit at least twelve (12) feet away from the first and third base lines. Do not let them crowd the home plate area in case a player throws a bat, a fielder is running for the ball, or a runner is using the area to get to a base.

e) If a player consistently throws the bat, do something about it. Don't assume that everything will be okay and he/she will eventually figure out how to do this properly. After the first time, make sure to coach the player in the proper way of dropping the bat. If this doesn't work, have the player carry the bat to first base before releasing it. If all else fails, call the batter/runner out and remove him/her from the base.

f) Coaches may stand near first and third base to coach their runners, as well as the coach at home to coach the batters and place the ball on the tee and make out calls at home. The coach at home should remove the tee from the plate when a play is going to be made on a runner at home plate. Two defensive coaches may stand near the foul lines to coach players on positioning and fundamentals during their half of the inning out in the field. It is okay for parents to help the outfielders. No coaches may interfere with a play at any time.

g) Players who are put out prior to reaching a base should not be allowed to continue. It is important that they begin to realize the difference between being safe or out at this level. The defensive players feel cheated when they know they get an out and the player remains on the base.

  1. FIELDS:

a) Bases will be approximately 45 feet apart.

b) Pitching mounds are generally 30 feet from the plate.

ROTATIONS

Below is a suggested method of rotation of players during the games. The league suggests that each player play a position for (1) one inning in a game or have a rotation schedule that allows players to experience all positions of the game multiple times over the season. The emphasis in this Program is on the development of all players.

Suggested Rotation:

- Rotate every inning:

  • Catcher to Right Field
  • Right Field to First Base
  • First Base to Rover
  • Rover to Second Base
  • Second Base to Center
  • Center to Short Stop
  • Short Stop to Left Field
  • Left Field to Third Base
  • Third Base to Pitcher
  • Pitcher to Catcher

Please remember that this is a developmental league. You are dealing with very young and impressionable children who are here to develop basic skills and have fun. It is the coaches' responsibility to maintain the focus of this program -- teaching fundamentals while maintaining a FUN, HEALTHY, and SAFE ATMOSPHERE.
