107 REARING CALVES

Avg £208

A high entry of fresh and weaned calves sold to an impressively strong trade again this week with the better quality calves reaching exceptional prices.

Friesians (32): Bull calves sold to an average of £81.90 the stronger bull calves reaching £150+. The top price for a Friesian bull calf was £180 from Vendor D J Hibbard & Sons. Smaller bull calves reached somewhere around £50 per head.

Native Breeds (14): Hereford bull calves averaged £244 per head topping at £320 from A W Jones. Angus heifer calves topped at £200 averaging at a strong £176.50.

Simmental (26): A high entry of Simmental calves across the board helped boost the trade. Bull calves averaged £240 with the strongest to £350 from M D Pike. Heifers were not far behind the bull calves averaging at £235. 18 weaned calves averaging at £235. 18 weaned calves sold to a high average of £340 the highest at £395 for a bull calf from W J & E W Hunt.

Limousin (11): Bull calves topped at £335 from D Meredith. Heifers calves topped at £222. All calves averaged at £262 across the board.

Charolais/British Blue/Blonde (22): The strongest British Blue x sold at an impressive £430 from M/s D J & N J Wall. A Blonde bull calf not far behind at £418. Blue’s and Blonde’s sold to a high average of £286 for bull calves and £233 for heifer calves. A weaned Charolais x heifer from M/s R J Shield sold for £320.

More Vendors needed to meet an exceptionally high demand for all types of calves each week and should be encouraged by a regular strong trade.

10 DAIRY CATTLE & BEEF COWS

A freshly calved British Friesian heifer sold to £1300 from m/s C Powell & Sons, Shurdington with bullers to £585 from Mr A Gleed, Aston Keynes. A Simmental cow & her Hereford steer calf sold to £1320 from Mrs J Webb, Sprithill with grazing cows to £1310 from the same home.

357 STORE CATTLE

Averages: Steers £729, Heifers £691

Another good entry saw few strong older cattle but a good show of stronger farming cattle which sold to a blistering trade.

The few stronger older cattle (24 – 30mnths) saw a Hereford steer to £965 (172p/kg) from Mr R Garlick, Newent with overage British Blue’s to £945 (169p/kg) from the same home. An overage Friesian steer sold to £940 (112p/kg) from M/s Bickford Field farms, Shurdington.

The older heifers saw British Blue’s to £935 (164p/kg) from M/s Breakspear & Son, Stanford Dingley & £905 (173p/kg) from M/s T Rymer & Son, Uley.

The farming cattle (16 – 20mnths) met an exceptionally strong trade with the better shaped sorts well sold with many steers over £1000 (170 - 195p/kg) topping at £1290 (174p/kg) for an Aberdeen Angus from Mrs J Webb, Spirthill & £1030 (195p/kg) from M/s F & J King, Whiteshill. The Continental steers saw a grand run of Charolais x steers from M/s S Walker & Sons, Asthall selling to £1090 (195p/kg), £1080 (200p/kg) & £1065 (194p/kg). British Blue steers from Mr L Selman, Kingswood sold to £1180 (194p/kg) & £1000 (193p/kg). The Friesian steers traded generally between 130 – 140p/kg topping at £855 (150p/kg) from Mr L Selman, Kingswood.

The heifers saw the stronger sorts over £850 topping at £1150 (171p/kg) for a Simmental from M/s Breakspear & Son, Stanford Dingley & £1000 (199p/kg) for Charolais’ from /s S Walker & Sons, Asthall. Simmental heifers from M/s F & J Williams, Heathfield sold to £935 (175p/kg) & ££870 (168p/kg)

The younger stores (15 – 18mnths) again saw the best cattle very dear with Simmental steers to £1020 (181p/kg) from M/s F & J Williams, Heathfield & £925 (175p/kg0 from M/s D Rumming & Son, Lydiard Tregoze.

The heifers also met a good trade with Blonde’s to £805 (175p/kg) & £772 (176p/kg) from M/s G Maidment & Son, Cleverton.

The weaned calves & young stores (12 – 14mnths) were very short in number topping at £900 (164p/kg) for a Aberdeen Angus steer from Miss F Mustoe, Witcombe. Organic Simmental bull calves (4mnths) sold to £558 (233p/kg) from Mr M Pike, Sherston.

Overall Average – 170p/kg

Another pleasing entry with more lambs forward and the trade similar to last week. The better shaped & good meated lambs traded between 177 – 184p/kg topping at 187p/kg £70 for 37½ kg from Mr A Goscombe. The general run of lambs traded between 168 – 175p/kg with only a few of the plainer or very loose coated lambs under these figures. The heavier lambs traded generally between £78 - £80 topping at £82 for 49½kg from Mr R Matthews.

Overall Average - £60.48

Another good entry of ewes sold to similar trade to last week with again reports of easier trades elsewhere but our trade held up well again. Very few real strong ewes with best Suffolk & Continental’s trading between £85 - £95 topping at £100 with Mules £70 - £75 topping at £98. The medium & half meated or over fat ewes traded between £65 - £75 with the bigger plain ewes £55 – £65. The smaller or very plain ewes traded between £45 - £60. Slaughter Rams sold to £120.

BREEDING EWES

North Country Mule breeding ewes (2yrs) sold to £129 from M/s J Emmerson & Sons with Lleyn Theaves to £77.50from Mr P Haskins.

STORE & EWE LAMBS

A reasonable entry sold to a very strong trade with Suffolk Mule store lambs to £70 from Mr A Wadland & £69.50 from Mr P Meek. The medium and longer term lambs seemed very well sold between £58 - £63.

BREEDING RAMS

Charollais shearling rams to £185 from M/s Moorhouse Farms.

30 BARREN COWS & OTM CATTLE

Another very good trade for all cattle on offer but numbers continue to be disappointing not helped by the TB situation in the area generally.

Overage steers from A G Hunt, Stroud saw 765 kg, Blue steers to £1,350.23 and similar (790 kg) to £1,323.25. Blue heifers from M/s J a Jones 7 Son weighting 585 kg made £1044.23.

In the cow section all types on good demand. Best Continental cows saw 765 kg South Devon from Downland Farming at £1,181.93 with a well meated 650 kg Simmental cow from R Scott coming to £932.75.

Best Friesians from M/s Reading & Kirby 910 kg grossing £1087.45 and 750 kg from Roy Townsend to £963.75. The medium cows traded £750-£850 a few plainer cows below £500.
