Use of Assessment Results:
After careful evaluation of the tests and comparing the results of the last pre/post- tests, it is determined that the test adequately reflects the students learning outcomes. This is the first time the assessment was used since it was revised. It should be noted that only approximately half of the students who took the pre-test completed the post test. There were five questions of the 20 where the effectiveness measure was not met; however, there were multiple questions which covered each SLO. Thus every SLO was met with at least one question. Continued emphasis on completion of the test will be stressed with the faculty, and no other changes will be made at this time.
Minutes from the January department meeting are below to document the discussion of the theatre faculty.
Humanities Faculty Meeting
January 14, 2013
The Humanities Department met on January 2013. All members were present including Brian Robinson, Jeannie Brown, Emily Seal, Phyllis Adams, David Bethea, Cherie Williams, Kathy Kile and Debbie Zimmerman.
The lunch meeting was from 12:30pm -2:30pm.
1. Personnel updates: Kathy Kile was introduced as a Temporary full time communication instructor. She will be covering classes in Smyrna and the main campus as Dr. Phyllis Adams will be taking partial sick leave to care for her mother. Ms Kile will be teaching speech and theatre courses.
2. Summer school staffing: The new policy for summer school staffing was discussed. Faculty were encouraged to look forward and determine if they desire to teach. The numbers needed for enrollment will be forth coming from Dr. Copenhaver. It is likely that only one course will be taught for 1/32 rate.
3. Gen Ed. Assessment Information: The group discussed the status of the General Education Assessment. The Art and Music instructors decided to hold meetings with adjuncts from their respective disciplines later in the semester to work on improvements in the assessment process. The speech and theatre instructors decided to meet following this meeting to discuss the upcoming assessment.( See notes below)
4. New QEP Spring: This spring will be the last semester of the QEP concerning the International modules. We will be administering all of the previous modules and will be adding the new module for COMM 1010. Ms Williams wrote the module. She briefly explained the module dealing with Nollywood, Bollywood and Hollywood.
Academic Reorganization: Faculty were reminded that they should submit any comments concerning the proposed reorganization to Dr. Copenhaver by the end of January.
5. Faculty Sick Leave: The sick leave policy was distributed and the faculty were reminded that if they are out the time for a day of sick leave is 7.5 hours.
Speech and Theatre meeting: 2:30-4:00pm
Following the meeting the speech and theatre instructors remained and discussed Gen Ed assessment.
1. The report that had been sent to TBR was discussed. The speech instructors were pleased with the results of the assessment. It was discussed that the scores continue to come up. All standards for grading were met in the 2012 assessment. Analysis of the grading process and the fact that we are now using computerized rubrics ensued. All felt that the older process of hand grading by only full time faculty was more accurate. Now no one sees the speeches but the instructor, and it is felt that there may be an inflation of scores when the individual instructors load their on scores. All agreed, however that personally scoring the 200-300 speeches is prohibitive. The rubric was discussed, and all supported retaining it. There was discussion of the errors that occurred when through the IE office when the rubrics were loaded. Some had to be reloaded and this caused frustration with the process. It was decide that the chair would discuss the problem with Ms Collins to achieve more accuracy in the future.
2. The theatre instructors examined the previous pre/post test and determined that it was flawed. The group continued the meeting with an item by item analysis and found that many of the questions were too specific to meet the SLO’s. All instructors present submitted suggestions and it was determined that Ms. Seal would compile a new test based on the suggestions. The exam was to be completed by the first day of classes. Another idea presented was for the chair to communicate the importance of the pre/ post exam to the adjuncts who teach the course. It appears that some instructors emphasize the exam more than others and also the completion rate of the exam would be improved if more emphasis was given.
Meeting adjourned at 4:00pm. Debbie Zimmerman
