Motion III (Dune Buggy)

Materials:

  • Stopwatch
  • Dune buggy
  • Tape
  • Meter stick

  1. Use tape to mark 4 points, in a straight line, .5 meters apart. Label them A B C D respectively.
  1. Start the car moving 1 foot or so before point A.
  1. Start the stopwatch when the car passes mark A. Stop the stopwatch when it passes the designated mark.
  1. Record the time in the data table below.
  1. After you have timed all 3 trials calculate the average speed and record in the data table.

Trial / Course / Distance / Time / Average Speed
1 / A – B / .5 m
2 / A – C / 1 m
3 / A – D / 1.5 m

Hmmmmmmmmm.

1.Graph the data.

2.What does the graph look like? ______

3.What does that tell you about the speed/velocity of the dune buggy?

4.Using the numbers from the paper called “Motion I Dune Buggy Pull”. (the page with the marble race on the bottom). How much force is moving the dune buggy forward? ______

5.How much force is moving it backwards? ______

6.So the forces are said to be ______

7.The motion of the dune buggy is ______

8.IndicatorDescribe how the change in the position (motion) of an object is always judged and described in comparison to a reference point. What are/is the reference point in this activity? ______

  1. Graph the data.
  2. What does the graph look like? Straight – flat – horizontal
  3. What does that tell you about the speed/velocity of the dune buggy?Constant
  4. Using the numbers from the paper called “Motion I Dune Buggy Pull”. (the page with the marble race on the bottom). How much force is moving the dune buggy forward? 2-3 Newtons
  5. How much force is moving it backwards? 2-3 Newtons
  6. So the forces are said to be Balanced
  7. The motion of the dune buggy is constant velocity
  8. Indicator Describe how the change in the position (motion) of an object is always judged and described in comparison to a reference point. What are/is the reference point in this activity? Marks on the floor
