MOST COMMON IB Exam Credit and Cut Scores for Colorado Public Colleges & Universities

Recall that “one of the main goals directing this work is to ensure that PLA credits earned at one public institution will be accepted in transfer and apply to equivalent general education requirements at any receiving public institution and to unify equivalently applied cut scores…to the greatest extent possible” (pg. 1, Summary, of the below linked CCHE agenda item).

This table contains the most common IB exams (both SL & HL versions, where applicable). The next step in the CCHE approved process (linked here in full) is Phase 1, Goal 1, which is to:

Establish common cut scores for standardized assessments, such as AP, CLEP, DSST and IB, and follow ACE’s recommended amount of military and workforce credit, for purposes of creating transferability among public institutions for credits to be applied toward fulfillment of gtPathways curriculum categories. For example, if a student earns a 3 on the AP English Language and Composition exam, that student will have fulfilled the GT-C01 category of gtPathways at any public institution of higher education in Colorado. The receiving institution would determine the exact course equivalency depending on courses that are used to fulfill the GT-C01 requirement at that institution… (Responsible group – individual institutions, faculty discipline experts, guided by General Education Council and/or Academic Council)

The task now is to try and meet the goal above and, where your institution feels the minimum cut score must be different than a 4, to provide evidence to justify that. Students who have successfully completed an international baccalaureate (IB) diploma program shall, at a minimum, receive 24 semester credits (or their equivalent), which shall apply to general education, elective or major requirements (at the public institution’s discretion), for IB exams administered as part of the diploma program on which the student received a score of 4 or higher, per §23-1-13.3, Colorado Revised Statute.

Any course with a Guaranteed Pathways (GT) notation is guaranteed to transfer and apply to gtPathways general education requirements in any Liberal Arts & Sciences associate or bachelor degree at any Colorado public college or university. A list of degrees that do not contain the gtPathways curriculum and to which these courses may not apply is listed here. These courses may also apply to major and elective credit, at the institution’s discretion. Students are strongly encouraged to seek advising from the institution at which they are currently enrolled and to which they plan to transfer.

• The number in parenthesis is the amount of credit. So (3) = 3 semester credits.
• The gtPathways notations, such as GT-CO1, are explained here, along with a list of all gtPathways approved courses at each institution.

UCD Notes:

1. Students must meet the major department’s laboratory proficiency standards before enrolling in additional laboratory courses.

2. Computer science majors who demonstrate proficiency in C++ programming will receive credit that substitutes for CSCI 1410 and CSCI 2421. Business majors will receive credit that substitutes for ISMG 2200 and three elective credits.
