PURPOSE OF THE MODULE:

To monitor household protective behaviour against mosquitoes

MODULE HISTORY:

May 2001 (Wave 5) – The West Nile Virus module was added to RRFSS and included questions on WNV awareness, mosquito protection and bird surveillance

May 2002 (Wave 17) – The West Nile Virus module was divided into three modules:

  • West Nile Virus
  • Mosquito Protection
  • Bird Surveillance

May 2004 (Wave 41) – The Mosquito Protection module was divided into two modules:

  • Mosquito Protection Personal
  • Mosquito Protection Household

Interviewer instruction: if required, 'containers' do not include swimming pools that are not cleaned and chlorinated, ditches or low lying areas

Interviewer instruction(added wave 6):if required, “areas or objects such as bird baths, rain barrels, planters, swimming pools that are not cleaned and chlorinated, old tires, collection of water after rain, open gutters”.

Interviewer instruction: if asked, a larvicide is a type of pesticide used to kill mosquitoes before they mature into adults. If R says they are not sure what we mean but they do not put anything in the water, code as "no".

If required, it does not matter when R put up the bat house. If R indicates they put one up some time ago, determine if the bat house is still up. If still up code "yes," if no longer up code "no."
