Morgan McCannAssessment
- To measure the effectiveness of napping in a corporate office setting on work performance.
- The population is designed for employees in a corporate environment. They would include age ranges from twenties all the way to sixties depending on who is employed. The population would be male and female, have a high ability to complete the survey, would be the employees are well as management all the way up to the CEO. They would all have the same exposure to the activity.
- There would be a pre and post survey. The pre survey would include ratings of how they feel their performance is at work, specifically at different times of the day, it would ask about current sleep schedules, caffeine intake, and factors that may increase stress or drowsiness at work. Based on the pre survey, nap times would be designated by department or employee. The post survey would ask similar questions as the pre survey to determine how napping has improved or decreased overall performance.
- The components of the issue I have selected are employee productivity, mental/physical qualities are increased, make employees healthier, and reduce the risk of accidents and errors on the job.
- The scale will be like a pass or fail, either the 20 minute power nap at work improved these components or they did not.
- The person administering wouldn’t need much to do this. They would just have to observe behavior of a person going a whole work day without a nap and then observing a work day with a nap. One factor that may also be considered is the quality of the nap.
- The results of the scale will determine if employees are to nap or not at work. This would an example of a formative assessment because the feedback provided will determine how to change the work environment.

Based on the answers from the pre and post survey, we will be able to determine if naps are effective at work. The people will all be taking a 20 minute nap around 2 or 3 p.m. Those who are already getting good sleep at night, wake up energized, start their day off with exercise, eat a good breakfast, don’t rely on caffeine, and feel productive throughout the day may still benefit from taking a nap. It could also make them more tired and will not help them. Based on the results, a nap might not be the right choice for everyone.
Scale:
Nap / No NapThis person would benefit at work if they take a 20 minute nap in the afternoon. Based on the assessment they show fewer errors, are more productive, and have more energy when napping. / This person would not benefit from a nap at work. They feel more tired and less productive after napping and it either makes their work environment worse or stay the same. This person may also already be a generally energetic and productive person to begin with.
If a person answers yes to questions 3 through 6 on the post survey, they will have a nap added to their schedule. If someone answers yes to questions 1 and 2 or no to 3 through 6, they will not have a nap added to their schedule.
