Regular Meeting

The Morgan County Board of Education met in a regular session on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. in the Berkeley Springs High School Media Center located at 149 Concord Avenue, Berkeley Springs, WV.

Aaron Close, Vice President presided. Laura Smith, Pete Gordon and John Rowland, Members, and Erich May, Superintendent, were present. David Ambrose was absent.

Present were: Treasurer, Ann Bell; Directors – Tom Shade, Russell Penner, Jamie Harris. Others – Amy Penner and Betsy Buser. Media – Kate Evans, Morgan Messenger.

I.  Call to Order

Vice President Close called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

II.  Pledge of Allegiance

Vice President Close led those present in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

III. Roll Call

All board of education members were present except for David Ambrose.

IV. Approval of Agenda and Addenda

A motion was made by Mr. Rowland, seconded by Mrs. Smith, and unanimously passed by those present to approve the Agenda and Addenda.

V. Presentation

A.  RESA IT Update

Tom Shade updated the board on technology and how it will be affected by the closure of the RESA’s.

NOTE: Mr. Close stated he would be going to Morgantown to receive the 2017 West Virginia Brownfield Award for Community Engagement.

NOTE: Mr. Rowland noted that the Hall of Fame Banquet is being held on Saturday, September 8, 2017.

C.  Superintendent

NOTE: Superintendent May stated that he would be attending the Teacher of the Year Ceremony in Charleston on September 18th. Morgan County Teacher Tamara Bittorf if one of six finalists. The winner will be announced that evening.

NOTE: Superintendent May discussed the tornado warning that occurred this week.

NOTE: Superintendent May informed the board that his goal is to be in every school - every week.

A motion was made by Mrs. Smith, seconded by Mr. Gordon, and unanimously passed by those present to approve the Consent Agenda.

A motion was made by Mr. Rowland, seconded by Mrs. Smith, and unanimously passed by those present to approve the Personnel Agenda.

X. Program Development

A. Approve Economics 2 elective to be taught at Berkeley Springs High School

A motion was made by Mr. Gordon, seconded by Mrs. Smith, and unanimously passed by those present to approve Agenda Item X.A.

XI. Executive Session Pursuant to West Virginia Code 6-9A-4(b)(A) to establish superintendent goals for the 2017-2018 school year.

A motion was made by Mr. Rowland, seconded by Mr. Gordon and unanimously passed by those present to enter into Executive Session pursuant to WV Code 6-9A-4(b)(A) to establish superintendent goals for the 2017-2018 school year. The Board entered into executive session at 7:32 p.m. President Ambrose reconvened the meeting to open session at 8:27 p.m. No action was taken.
