More accolades for Jim Buston of OMS at the Pipeline Industries Guild’s 56th Annual Dinner

Jim Buston, Senior Business Executive at pipe measurement specialist Optical Metrology Services (OMS) Ltd, has won £50 and a bottle of champagne for finishing runner-up in the J.W. Jones Award 2013, presented at the Pipeline Industries Guild’s 56th Annual Dinner.

The Pipeline Industries Guild’s 56th Annual Dinner took place on 12th March 2013 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London. Guest speakers included popular comedian and impressionist Rory Bremner. The Guild’s Annual Dinner is the most widely recognised industry event for members to network and entertain their guests. The audience included the leaders of companies across the entire spectrum of the pipeline industry.

The J.W. Jones Award is awarded every two years to the author(s) of a written paper presented to a Branch Technical Meeting, which best meets the awards criteria. One of the primary aims of this award is to encourage younger authors, although there is no age limit imposed on authorship. The award is made in the honour of the eponymous founder of the Guild and its first Chairman, who died in 1971.

Jim’s paper and presentation entitled “Making Ends Meet”, outlined a number of different methods for checking pipe end geometry in oil and gas pipeline projects and how it is now possible to use actual measured profiles of the shapes of pipe ends to proactively manage and improve the fit-up process in order to minimise HiLo. Using systems such as OMS’ SmartFit system, measured profiles can be assessed to identify difficult pipes early on and to achieve the best possible fit up with the pipes. The paper also highlights how after welding, these pipes can then be inspected internally using a combination of laser-based measurement and camera-based systems.

This latest prize for Jim follows on from his two previous successes. In June 2012, Jim won the Pipeline Industries Guild’s National Young Professional Award for a Technical Paper. In August 2011, he also won the Pipeline Industries Guild’s Carron Trophy Young Person’s Presentation Competition.

Established in 1957, The Pipeline Industries Guild has evolved to become the only association worldwide to cater directly for the needs of the pipeline industry, regardless of engineering discipline, application or qualification. The Guild’s membership comprises those with interests in pipelines, transporting hydrocarbon products, chemicals, water, wastewater, and many other substances, both onshore and offshore. All are governed by the industry’s twin need to combine quality with safety, whilst at the same time meeting all the latest environmental and legislative requirements.
