POETRY ANTHOLOGY

This project will focus on poetry and the poetic devices used in creating poetry. You will be reading a variety of famous poems as well as creating your own poetry anthology!
Objective: Students will be able to express complex ideas sequentially using standard conventions and a broad range of new vocabulary, idioms, and figurative language with consistent tense usage.
Task: Create a poetry anthology composed of seven original poems and two classic poems that are meaningful to you. After you compile your anthology, you will present your best poem.
Content of Anthology:
*Compile anthology in the following order!
1. Cover Page
This page should include a title for your anthology, a simile or metaphor that shows
your personal feelings about poetry, a picture that depicts your simile/metaphor,
and your name.
2. Cover Letter
The cover letter should be written to your language arts teacher and should
address the following questions:
-Intro: Overall what did you like/dislike about poetry unit? Why?
-What were your strongest/weakest poems? Explain.
-What were the hardest/easiest devices to use? Why?
-Did you find the poems we read in class helpful? Why or why not?
-Conclude: What are your final thoughts/feelings about this unit?
3. Table of Contents
The table of contents should provide your reader with a complete listing of every
entry in your anthology. Use the following format guide:

4. Seven Original Poems
Each poem should be written neatly and should be illustrated with pictures that
reflect the theme of the poem. Each poem needs to include at least one type of
poetic device/figure of speech. Within your seven poems, at least seven different
devices/figures of speech should be evident. Examples of the technique should be
highlighted/underlined in the poem and the poetry technique you use should be
clearly written at the bottom of the page.
5. Two Classic Poems of Your Choice
Each poem should be chosen from a book of poetry or from another person’s
collection. You will need to type or print a copy of the poem and illustrate
it with pictures or symbols reflecting the poem’s theme. You will write a reflection
for each poem explaining why you chose the poem and what it means to you. You
may write your reflection in one of the following formats:
o A letter to a friend
o A journal/diary entry
o A newspaper column review
Within the reflection for each poem, several of the following questions should be
addressed. Each reflection should be at least 1/2 page long.
-What are the literal/interpretive meanings of the poem?
-Why did you choose to include this particular poem in your anthology?
(Think: As a reader, how and why did you relate to the poem?)
-What poetic devices does the author use? Are they effective? How? Why?
-What would this poem mean to another teenager?
(Think: How might a teen from a different culture/place relate or react to the poem?
-How does this poem relate to real life?

Poetry Terms
The author has demonstrated an understanding of at least seven different poetry terms by using unique examples of poetic devices/figures of speech in each original poem. Examples of the technique are highlighted/underlined in the poem and the poetry technique used is clearly written at the bottom of the page. / 10 points
Classic Poems
Two classic poems have been included. The poems are accurate and are not poems that have been taught in class. / 10 points
Reflections
Two informative, insightful, and well written reflections for each of the classic poems have been included. Each reflection is an appropriate format and addresses 2-3 of the given questions. / 20 points
Illustrations
For each original and classic poem, a colorful illustration/symbol has been included. The illustration or symbol clearly represents the poem’s overall theme. You may use clip art. / 10 points
