Thank you for your interest in the position of Head of Mathsand Numeracy working at Monkwearmouth Academy within Wearmouth Learning Trust.

Wearmouth Learning Trust is a Multi Academy Trust (MAT) based in the north of Sunderland and currently consists of two Academies. Monkwearmouth Academy is a secondary school which became an Academy in December 2013 and in September 2016 opened a sixth form provision in partnership with South Tyneside College. Redby Academy is a primary school which also provides nursery provision, Redby became an Academy in 2011 and joined the Trust in November 2014.

The role of Head of Maths and Numeracy will be responsible for modelling and leading the continuous improvement of Maths and Numeracy across the academy enabling the department to become outstanding, the development of an innovative curriculum for students ensuring the maths offer is appropriate for all students and leading and managing staff across all key stages within the department.

Teacher Pay Scales plus an additional allowance of between £7,622 and £9,379 per annum (equivalent to TLR 1a and TLR 1b) dependent upon experience
The Governors wish to appoint an outstanding professional to the post of Head of Maths & Numeracy. The successful applicant should be a teacher of the highest ability who can lead and build upon the high standards of the department.
The successful applicant will be an outstanding and innovative practitioner with values that support our ethos that every child really does matter. In addition they will be an ambitious and reflective colleague with the ability to engage, enthuse and inspire staff within the department to support continuous improvement.

Provide inspirational, innovative and motivational leadership to achieve outstanding practice.
Model and plan teaching and assessment in order to develop staff in the school to achieve high quality teaching, effective use of resources and the highest standards of learning and achievement for all students /
  1. Model and lead the continuous improvement of teaching in both Maths and Numeracy across the academy, keeping up to date with national developments in practice and methodology to assist in our drive to secure transformational change
  2. Develop an innovative curriculum for students which values the talents and aspirations of all, ensuring that the Maths curriculum offer is appropriate for all students
  3. Promote and secure an inclusive approach to the achievement of all students and staff, identifying, facilitating and delivering quality CPD linked effectively to Appraisal and reflecting the priorities of the Academy Improvement Plan
  4. Lead and manage staff across all key stages within the department, including whole school strategic responsibilities and the line management and appraisal of TLR post holders and other colleagues
  5. Ensure efficient and effective management and deployment of staff and resources across the department
  6. Coach and mentor staff taking a leading role in implementing accountability and support strategies
  7. Develop a coherent, shared vision for learning through teamwork, collaboration and sharing of best practice, ensuring a consistent of approach to teaching, seeking out best practice through networks and research
  8. Raise standards within the Maths & Numeracy department to become an outstanding curriculum area
  9. Implement the Teaching Learning and Assessment Policy, including the process of target setting.
  10. Ensure that policies and quality assurance procedures are in place for effective individual assessment, recording and reporting on student progress
  11. Use data analysis to identify areas where individuals/groups of colleagues, or the whole school may need support in order to improve outcomes for students
  12. Ensure that barriers to students’ learning are quickly identified and consequent interventions are enacted so that all students make outstanding progress
  13. Contribute to faculty improvement planning and self-evaluation as appropriate, including the use of student voice.
  14. To assist and support in the recruitment and induction of new staff and facilitate the development of NQTs and student teachers within the school

Interview Process

After the closing date, shortlisting will be conducted by a panel, who will match your skills/experience against the criteria in the person specification. You will be selected for interview entirely on the contents of your application form, so please read the job description and person specification ensuring your personal statement addresses and evidences the selection criteria detailed in the person specification.

We will seek references for all shortlisted candidates prior to the interview, any relevant issues arising from references will be taken up at interview.

In addition to candidates’ ability to perform the duties of the post, the interview will also explore issues relating to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Conditional Offer: Pre-Employment Checks

Any offer to a successful candidate will be conditional upon:

  • Verification of identify checks and qualifications
  • Satisfactory DBS disclosure
