Newsletter No. 5 25th April 2006

Dear Families

The 2nd term is a short but very busy term both in the classroom and on the sports field. I hope that all families received the comprehensive extramural programme together with the 2nd term report and that your child has found an activity in which to participate. There is an ever-increasing need to ensure that our children do not follow global trends of physically weak and unfit children. In the classroom, the lack of fitness and muscular strength has serious implications for the overall mental development and concentration of every child. Research is showing that an unfit child with an unbalanced diet is a likely candidate for learning difficulties at school. Please encourage your child to take Physical Education and sports seriously – our teachers are committed to do the same.

Our school governing body elections have been scheduled for Monday 22nd May 2006. The official notification is included with this newsletter. I know that our school community will ensure that the process is well managed and that our new school governing body will follow the fine traditions of service of their predecessors.

I am proud of the following children and families:

MIGUEL TIZZONE achieved the Tables Challenge Grand Slam by scoring 100% every year since Grade 4. Well done.
2005 Under 13 soccer side that toured the famous Harrow School in the UK must have left a good impression during their overseas tour last year, because our school was the beneficiary of almost R30 000 raised by their boys for our school sport. Well done boys from last year and special thanks to Mr David Elleray and Mr Bennett for facilitating this.
TOP ‘MY SCHOOL’ families for December 2005. Well done and thank you to every family that uses this card to help with our never-ending fund-raising efforts. The following families are real stars! /

COLD WEATHER UNIFORM

As the weather gets colder, it becomes a problem to keep uniform neat. Please adhere to the following dress rules:

Only the official tracksuit may be worn to school

Odd tops or windbreakers worn over jerseys and Dri-macs are not permitted

Green ‘beanies’ are only permitted on very cold days and must be removed at school

The school tracksuit pants must be worn with the tracksuit top and not a jersey, Dri-mac or blazer

2ND HAND SALE – 5th August 2006

Included with this newsletter is a black plastic bag for contributions towards our annual sale of good 2nd hand clothing and other household items. A big thank you to families who have already responded so generously. We hope that this could be an opportunity for families to do a clean-out for a very good cause. The unsold clothing is sent to various deserving organisations after the sale.

ABSENTEEISM AND PUNCTUALITY

Raising young people to have discipline and to respect law and order is an on-going task at school. Adherence to classroom codes of conduct, uniform regulations and other school rules are part of the education process that we all hope will produce law-abiding South Africans for the future. The following scenarios happened recently at school:

Lateness as a daily occurrence. No future employer will put up with the lack in punctuality shown by some of our families

Children remain uncollected for hours after school. Aside from being a real safety risk, the office is inundated with requests to use the phone and to trace late parents.

For a school to be a safe and secure place, school rules are for all at all times. Please support us in our task to make the future citizens of our country honest, disciplined and responsible.

PHOTOGRAPH MONEY

There are still a few families who took photographs at the end of last term and who have not yet paid for them. We need to pay the photographer at the end of the month and ask that all outstanding amounts are paid by Tuesday 2nd May. The individual photographs cost R35 and the class photographs R20
