Bellwork 5

Monday – Welcome to the world of science fiction. Your classmates are

shrinking and expanding right before your very eyes. As you sit on the floor at the base of the ladder and watch a student-model ascend the steps, his or her body proportionsalter beyond recognition. Take visual measurements. Notice how the size of thestudent-model's arms, legs, head, and clothes changes, and then changes again as he or she descends the ladder. Describe the evolution of the visual measurements you take. From where do these perceptions originate? How much stranger will the figure become?

Tuesday – Recall the experience of leaving a theater in the daytime, and

how hard it was to get your eyes adjusted to the bright light outside. Or think of the opposite, trying to find a seat inside the theater when you first enter it. Think of otherexperiences in which your eyes have had to adjust when going from light to dark or viceversa. Describe one of these experiences in detail. What part of the eye does most ofthe adjusting?.

Wednesday – Describe in a short essay how your shapes represent your familymembers. Consider the size and complexity of your shapes. Are they sharp, rounded, straight, or curvy? Organic or geometric? How do your shapes interact with one another?Do they overlap or stand alone? Is there negative space between your shapes or are theydependent upon one another for stability?

Thursday – Compare Noguchi's Great Rock of Inner Seeking with George

Rickey's Four Lines Oblique , focusing on their use of form. Study their use of weight, direction, negative and positive shape and space, and organic and geometric form. Youmay wish to begin this exercise with a list of similarities and differences. How does theiruse of form, weight, and direction affect the way you interpret the work?

Friday - List all of the objects that you see in The Banjo Lesson. What do

these objects tell us about the setting of this scene? Identify the lightest and darkest

values in this picture. Where is the light source? What might the light source be? How did Tanner emphasize his figure? Write words to describe the mood of this painting.
