Module 1: Using Computers, LANs, and Email for Academic Coursework

Task 3: File Management

Name: ______Instructor: ______Section: ______

Objectives

In this task you will learn to:

  • create and name folders in your network partition
  • download and save files to folders
  • navigate to folders and files

Instructions

Listen and take notes as your instructor demonstrates how to create and name folders, copy and paste folders, copy and move files, and navigate to files. Then, complete these activities.

Managing Files and Folders
  1. Logon to the computer network and go to your partition (your network place) on the student server.
  2. Make a new folder in your partition.
  3. Name that folder SSK1203.
  4. Open the SSK1203 folder. In this folder make a new folder called Module 1.
  5. Copy the Module 1 folder and paste it. Rename that folder Module 2.
  6. Create one more folder using another method. Name it Module 3.
  7. Now make folders in your student partition for each of your other courses at Al Akhawayn University. (Be sure to name these folders appropriately.)

You will use the SSK1203 folder and those inside it to store all of your materials for this course.

From the desktop, how do you navigate to the Module 1 folder in your network partition?

Downloading and Storing Files

For the previous task, you should have downloaded and unzipped a file that contains all of the Microsoft Word versions of the tasks for Module 1. These files should be in your network partition, but NOT inside a folder.

If this is NOT the case, then do these steps first:

  1. Go to the course website for this class.
  2. Click on Module 1 in the menubar on the left.
  3. In the Module 1 page, click on "Download All" to retrieve the .zip file containing all of the Microsoft Word files for the tasks in this module.
  4. You want to save these files in your partition on the student server.
  5. Use what you learned in the previous task to open the .zip file and extract the enclosed files into your partition.

If you have files in your partition that belong in a folder, do these steps:

  1. Select the files you wish to move.
  2. Drag and drop the files into the Module 1 folder.
  3. Open the Module 1 folder and make sure that all of the files in it should be there.
  4. If you have accidentally moved a file--or folder--into this folder, use what you have learned to move it back where it should be.
Navigating to Folders and Files
  1. Close any windows that you have open and return just to the desktop.
  2. Navigate to the file named M1_concepts.doc that is included in the .zip file that you retrieved.
  3. Write down the steps you used to get to this file (how did you look, where did you look, what did you click on, etc.):
  1. Following your instructor’s guidelines, write down the path to this file showing its location on the computer you are using:
  1. Double-click on the file M1_concepts.doc filename. What happens when you do this?
  1. What does this file contain and what should you do with it?

Outside of class, you will need to open and print the files in your Module 1 folder so that you can include them in your notebook and work on the tasks. Follow your instructor's guidelines for when and how to print these files.
