Tyrrell 4-H’ers win honors at State Congress
Two Tyrrell County 4-H’ers received honors during the recent State 4-H Congress, held in Raleigh June 22-25. State 4-H Congress attracted 521 youth and their adult leaders for activities including presentations on a variety of subjects, leadership and citizenship training, service opportunities, officer elections and more.

This year’s 4-H Congress was moved from its traditional late July time slot and combined with another 4-H event, Citizenship Focus where 4-H’ers engage with their elected leaders in the N.C. General Assembly.

Grace Swain, 16, daughter of Buddy and Susan Swain of Columbia, won the Cecil and Leonard contest, sponsored by WRAL-TV. The contest was developed for the first time this year as a tribute to the late Ray Wilkinson, agriculture reporter for WRAL-TV for many years. Cecil and Leonard stories were a hallmark of Wilkinson’s broadcasts. 4-H’ers told or acted out stories from Cecil and Leonard scripts, and Grace’s performance was chosen as the best.

Lydia Swain, 9, Grace’s sister, won a gold medal in contests designed to test 4-H’ers’ knowledge of a variety of subjects. Lydia was the 9-10 age division of the hospitality, etiquette and social graces competition, sponsored by the Dinah Gore 4-H Foods, Nutrition, Fitness and Etiquette Endowment. Her presentation was titled “Little Miss Manners.”

The 4-H program is the youth education program of North Carolina Cooperative Extension, based at North Carolina State and North Carolina A&T State universities. More than 237,500 young people between the ages of 5 and 19 participate in North Carolina 4-H activities each year with the help of 20,780 adult and youth volunteers.
