COURSE DESCRIPTION

Sociology is a standard-level nine-week elective course designed primarily for juniors and seniors who are seeking academically challenging work as preparation for further education.

The course is designed to introduce the basic concepts, principles, and methods central to the study of human society.

Fundamental sociological topics will be investigated such as culture, socialization, deviance, social stratification, and institutions. Furthermore, a variety of sociological perspectives will be applied throughout this course in order to enable students to more effectively analyze and evaluate human behavior and social phenomena.

This course should enhance the student’s sociological imagination through discussion, participation in activities that explore the connections between individual actions and the larger social world, and the collection, analysis, an interpretation of data.

Assessment/Grading Systems

The entire course will be based on points. Letter grades will be assigned in accordance with CBSD/school policy. Points will be earned through the following:

Informative/Persuasive Essays

Homework Assignments

Journal Responses

Classroom Participation (Cawley Cash)

Research Project/Presentation

Debates/Simulations

ASSIGNMENT LATENESS POLICY/ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE

·  Major assignments must be handed in on the due date in order to receive full credit (regardless if student is present or absent that day). E-mailed assignments must receive a response to ensure it was received. Cawley is not responsible for un-openable e-mail attachments.

·  Work may be turned in ONE-DAY late with a 50% reduction in assigned point worth. Late work beyond the one-day window will not be accepted nor graded.

·  Students with excused absences will make up work/tests/quizzes in accordance with CBSD/school policies. Extended absences will follow CBSD district policies. Major assignments, however, must be submitted on the due date for full credit.

·  It is the responsibility of the student to keep up with missed assignments/in-class work. Students are expected to consult with classmates for missed work/assignments/notes. All handouts will be kept in a class folder for student access. Also, please check Cawley’s wiki regularly to see what is available on-line.

·  Students who need additional help/tutoring throughout the course are welcomed and strongly encouraged to participate in tutoring consultations with Mr. Cawley, who will be available before and after school. Be sure to schedule in advance. When not in class, Mr. Cawley is usually located in the 208 pod or is available by e-mail ().
