(UV intensity range that can be set is indicated on the screen as UV Intensity Min and Max.) Now go to Measurement(M)in the menu bar and select UV Intensity Adjustment(L). A message box of UV Intensity Adjustment is displayed; click yes. Now wait about 3 minutes while adjustment is made. When adjustment is completed, the UV intensity value will match the target value (or be very close). Another message box will appear indicating it is finished; click OK.

⑯Select Quantity of light correction coefficient: If this is the first time to use the AC-2 today, this value needs to be changed. The light correction data is changed at a later step however. So, for now, the old data in the system must be deleted. To delete, put cursor on the Quantity of Light Correction Coefficient, then right click and hold the mouse. Select Adjustment DataDelete. Value on screen will be changed to NONE.

⑰Input Power Number: Default Power Number is 0.5 (for metal sample). If it is desired to change the Power Number, put cursor to the right of Power Number, and click the mouse. Now type in the desired Power Number, and press ENTER.

Mounting the Sample.

⑱From Menu bar, select Measurement(M), and select Sample(S).Click YES on message box.

⑲Internal sample plate will be moved forward. When noise stops, press and release SAMPLE DOOR to open door.

⑳Place sample on the left side of sample plate. Pull Height Gauge to the right to rest over the sample. Then, rotate height handle wheel (located under sample plate), so that the top of the sample just rests against the height gauge probe.

21Move sample to center of sample plate, and hold in place with sample clips. NOTE: Sample clip grounds the sample to remove static voltage. If sample is on a non conductive substrate, then each conductive part of the sample must be touched to the sample clip momentarily to ground it before the sample substrate is clipped to the sample plate.

22Close the sample door and press on PUSH until it clicks shut. Once shut, click OK on screen.

Measurement

  1. From menu bar, select Measurement(M), and then Measurement(G), and then the measurement will start. Each data point will be plotted in turn on the graph over the next 5 to 10 minutes.
  1. When measurement is finished, an information block will appear on the screen. Press OK. Another information block will appear asking if you want to save the data. Press YES (unless you don’t want to save the data).
  1. Remove the sample: Select Measurement(M) and then Sample(S) from menu bar. This will move the sample forward internally. Once the noise stops, open the door and remove the sample. Close door, and then click OK on screen.
  1. If next step is to do another work function measurement, then return to step 10. After the first work function measurement of the day, Quantity of Light Correction Coefficient must be done. Also, if the UV Intensity has been changed for any samples, the Quantity of Light Correction Coefficient must be done for each UV Intensity. Also, if the material type measured is changed, the Quantity of Light Correction Coefficient must be done for each different material. To do the light correction, do steps 27 through 34 below.

Quantity of Light Correction Coefficient measurement

  1. Quantity of Light Correction Coefficient: First exit the work function screen by selecting File, and then Close, from the menu bar. Then, select Measurement(M), and then Quantity of Light Correction Coefficient(L). This opens the Measurement: Light Spectrum screen.

  1. Input the light coefficient name. Typically this should be the UV Intensity, such as 10 nW, and today’s date.
  1. Input Start Energy: Typically this is 4.2 eV, but this value should be set to the lowest value that you intend to use for measurements today.
  1. Input Finish Energy: Set to 6.2 eV
  1. Input Step: This value should be set to 0.10 eV increments.
  1. UV Intensity: Leave as it is.
  1. From menu bar, select Measurement(M) and then Measurement(G). This will start the Quantity of Light Correction Coefficient test. This test takes about 5 minutes. When completed, a message box appears on the screen. Press OK. Then, a second message box opens asking if you want to save the data. Press YES to save.
  1. Exit the Light Spectrum screen: Select FILE(F), and then CLOSE(X).

Determining the Work Function (or Ionization Potential) from the data:
