KINDERGARTEN
In Math, Kindergarteners are learning all about tally marks and T-charts in order to classify items in sets.

FIRST GRADE
The first graders had a fantastic field trip to the Camden Adventure Aquarium. The aquarium houses 8,500 aquatic species living in one of a kind exhibits. The first graders favored the sharks, penguins, hippos and the shark bridge! The students learned about many different habitats.

SECOND GRADE
Second Graders are working on subtraction within 100. We begin with a variety of strategies similar to those learned in the previous addition unit. As the chapter unfolds, you should notice increasing agility with 2-digit numbers and creating open number lines to solve problems. Students are learning that adding up and counting back can both be used to find the difference between two numbers.

THIRD GRADE
Third grade is working very hard during the month of December! The students are very busy in math working onsolving multiplication and division story problems using strategies to help them solve more difficult equations. In reading, the students are continuing their study of non-fiction, and are focusing on the importance of text features within an informational book. In writing, they are beginning to draft their informational pieces. They have moved out of the planning stage and are set on a topic of their "expertise". In Science, Miss Coyne's class has begun their study of Land and Water, Miss Salera's class has started their study on the Solar System, and Miss Mazzella's class is investigating Magnetism and Electricity!

FOURTH GRADE
Fourth grade readers are on the move. We are beginning our Historical Fiction Unit, and will soon be reading in book groups. Each book group will have their own constitution and decide how their group with function. We will be reading Lois Lowry's Number of the Stars, which takes place during the Holocaust. We look forward to learning more reading strategies that we can share with our families.

FIFTH GRADE
As we move through the first full week of the month of December, 5th grade students continue to work hard, persevere and strive for excellence in all subjects. With that said, the 5th grade is finishing up its work on informational essay writing and is moving on to the writing of opinion or persuasive essays. In reading, the 5th grade continues to develop strategies for reading works of fiction on a deeper level. Students are participating in reading clubs during Reader’s Workshop that are meant to have students discuss ideas of character, setting and theme on a deeper level. In math, Ms. Pinsley’s and Mr. Dieter’s classes are finishing up their work on Topic 5 in the new Pearson program, which looks at how to divide with a two digit divisor. In social studies, Mr. Dieter’s class is now turning its attention to understanding the origins and history of the thirteen original English colonies. In this unit, students will be put into small groups and given a colony to research. Each group will then be given the task of creating a billboard and a sales pitch in an effort to sell their assigned colony to other students as the ideal colony in which to live.

A NOTE FROM ART WITH MR. SHARP
Third Grade Parents: Students will begin learning about the Middle Ages. Students will be learning about the element of art known asform to create a castle turret out of clay. Each student will need a cardboard paper towel roll. Over the next two weeks please save and send in your cardboard rolls. If you have more than one roll to send in that would be great.

JUNIOR OPTIMIST CLUB
Miss Mazzella and Mrs. Yepremian continue to be impressed by the attendance, punctuality, and enthusiasm of our Junior Optimists! We are currently planning our initiative for the Martin Luther King Day of Service, stay tuned!

YOGA CLUB
Mrs. Yepremian, Miss Mazzella and the "yogis" have been very busy learning new poses and sequences. The members are very focused on their breathing, balance and peaceful mindset. They have learned poses such as "cat and cow", "bridge" "tree pose", "warrior series" and "triangle". Ask your child to show you!

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
GLENWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HEALTH OFFICE GUIDELINES

When to Keep Your Child at Home
It is important to maintain a healthy environment in the classroom to protect all students. Please seriously evaluate your child's health and ability to be productive in school when he or she complains of a headache, stomach pain, sore throat, or cold symptoms without a fever. Children often have no fever in the morning, but, as the day progresses, can develop a fever. Keeping your sick child home will help him/her recover sooner and will help to prevent the spread of germs to others. The following symptoms may indicate a contagious illness. Your child should be kept at home if any of the following occur:
* Fever of 100 degrees or higher the night prior to or the morning of school. Students must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school without the use of Tylenol, Motrin, or other fever-reducing medication
* Headache unrelieved by Tylenol or Motrin
* Vomiting and/or diarrhea within the past 24 hours, unless vomiting can be associated with a factor specific to a non-contagious illness. Students must be vomit/diarrhea free for 24 hours before returning to school
* Sore throat lasting 2-3 days unless cleared by a doctor.
* Drainage from the eyes, puffy and/or crusty eyes
* Excessive coughing unrelieved by cough drops or cough medicine
* Rash, unless determined to be non-communicable by a physician
* Abdominal pain
* Dizziness or chills
* Stiff neck or headache not caused by an accident or fall
Having your sick child rest at home with any of the above conditions will likely help with his/her recovery. It will also help to prevent the spread of germs to other students and staff members.

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT AMBASSADORS
**Glenwood Penny Competition!**

Student Ambassadors are running a Penny Competition: with a twist!

Each grade level now has a bin in the cafeteria labeled with their grade. Students can bring in pennies to put in their bin. Each penny counts for a point! Bring in as many pennies as you can for your grade!

But wait!!! The twist is- you can also bring in nickels, dimes, and quarters (any silver money) to put in other grades bins! BECAUSE- any silver coins put in a bin count for negative points!!! So- if you bring in a nickel, you want to put that nickel in ANOTHER grades bin!!!

For example- if you are in first grade and have 10 pennies and a dime (worth 10 points) you would put the 10 pennies in the first grade bin (gaining 10 points), and the dime in either Kindergarten, Second, Third, Fourth or Fifth grade (to subtract 10 points)! But beware- other grades will be putting silver coins in your bin too! The only way to stop those silver coins from subtracting points is more pennies!! It is very possible some grades may have negative points in the end!

SO- put pennies in your own grade levels jar, and put nickels, dimes and quarters in other grades jars! The competition will run from Monday, December 11th - Friday, December 16th!! Students can drop off money either in the morning before heading to the classroom, or at lunch. Good sportsmanship will be expected by all students, as we see every year! It may be helpful to divide up silver coins and pennies before coming to school!

At the end, a winner among groups will be declared, and all the proceeds are donated Glenwood Helping Glenwood !!!!!

Remember-the teachers and staff have their own jar!
Have fun!
