Dear Parents/Guardians:
Your child has been reading the book, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, in Language Arts. We are working through the book by acting it out, and will be viewing selected scenes from the film, Romeo and Juliet, which was filmed in 1968 (rated PG) by Franco Zeffirelli, as well as the 2013 Careli version (rated PG-13). The state requires the school to obtain parent permission on all films which are rated PG and above.
These film versions tell Shakespeare's classic tale of romance and tragedy. Two families of Verona, the Montagues and the Capulets, have been feuding with each other for years. Young Romeo Montague goes out with his friends to make trouble at a party the Capulets are hosting, but while there, he spies the Capulet's daughter Juliet, and falls hopelessly in love with her. She returns his affections, but they both know that their families will never allow them to follow their hearts (Jean-Marc Rocher).
The objectives for student learning are aligned to the Grade 8 Common Core Standards in Reading Literature, and Speaking and Listening:
· Analyze the extent to which a filmed production of a story stays faithful to or departs from the text or script, evaluating the choices made by the director or actors. (Common Core Standard 8.RL.7)
· Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one. in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. (Common Core Standard 8.SL.1)
· Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate.(Common Core Standard 8.SL.6)
If you have any questions regarding the film, please contact me via email at . Students who do not have permission to view the film will work in a separate area adjacent to the classroom.
Please sign below and indicate if your child has or does not have permission to view the film. Should you have any questions, please feel free to email me.
Sincerely,
