WRESTLING

MJHSAA WRESTLING GUIDELINES:

1.Practice Start Date:November 24, 2014

2.Maximum number of Matches not including play-offs:40 Bouts

3.Limits per day:10 Bouts

4.Minimum number of practices (involving bout drills) prior to first contest:7 Practices

PLAYER ELIGIBILITY

  1. Player eligibility must be submitted no later than 24 hours prior to the first high school meet participated in. Further additions to the player list during the season must also be submitted 24 hours prior to participation in high school meets.

RULES

For high school wrestling in Saskatchewan CAWA (Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association) rules as published on December 1 of the current season will be followed with the following SHSAA modifications.

1.Dress at Regional and Provincial Wrestling Competitions:

  • All competitors must wear a wrestling singlet.
  • A red/blue reversible singlet, or individual singlets of red & blue or a wrestling singlet in school colors must be worn. Club singlets are NOT acceptable.
  • Competitors must wear supple shoes with no heels buckles or metal attachments. Wrestling boots are strongly recommended.
  • Long hair must be worn tied back with an elastic or ribbon, with no metal attachments.
  • Jewellery is forbidden.
  • A wrestler with braces on his/her teeth, MUST wear a mouth guard.

2.Skin Inspection:

  • The on-site medical personnel MUST examine all competitors before wrestling. Any wrestler with ringworm or any contagious skin ailment will be ruled ineligible to participate.
  • The decision of the on-site medical personnel will be final in regards to the athlete’s participation in the event.

3.Weigh-ins:

  • All competitors are weighed in their wrestling attire, with bare feet. A 200 gram reduction in the weight will be allowed as the weight of the wrestling uniform.

4.Illegal holds:

  • A Ring Nelson (full or ¾ Nelson) from any position, a Back Supple, the West Point or any of its variations are all considered illegal holds.
  • The High Amplitude throw no longer is awarded 5 points; it is now awarded 3 points.

5.The Coach:

  • The coach that sits in the athlete’s corner is required to shake the hand of the opponent at the conclusion of the match.
  • Only 1 coach will be allowed in the corner during a match. The coach must remain seated in the appropriate corner at the edge of the mat during the bout except during the 30-second break between rounds. The coach may leave his/her seat to tend to an injured or bleeding athlete on the wrestling mat or to approach the mat chairperson around the mat surface to request a specific clarification.
  • The coach will not indicate points with hands nor attempt to influence the referee’s judgement by shouting phrases or using signals utilized by officials.
  • The coach is not allowed to speak to the referee, judge or the other athlete or coach during the match. The coach may, however, request an explanation from the mat chairperson, regarding a specific call, at an appropriate break in the action.
  • If the coach behaves in an unacceptable manner, the mat chairperson is required to give the coach a yellow card. If the offence continues, in the same match, the coach will be a give an red card and ordered to leave the corner and go into the stands for the duration of the match. The head official will make a decision to either let the coach resume his/her duties or disallow the coach from his/her duties for the duration of the tournament.
  • Coaches that continue to direct verbal abuse from the stands will be required to leave the competition hall for the duration of the tournament. If the coach is eliminated, the contest will be forfeited if there is not another approved coach or supervisor present to supervise the team.

6.Length of Match:

  • Each match will consist of three two-minute rounds.

7.Fluid Intake:

  • During the break following the first two-minutes of the bout, a wrestler will be allowed to drink water (fluids). The fluid must be available in the coach’s corner.

9.Wrestlers are only allowed to wrestle one weight category above their actual weight.

10.For interschool wrestling competition weight classes may be determined on the basis of age and experience provided that weight categories are kept within the following percentages:

11.Tie-break Procedure:

  • The tie-break procedure as outlined in the CAWA rules (references to 5 point actions do not apply) shall be used if a bout is tied at the end of the second period.

12.SHSAA Regional Tournament:

  • All wrestlers from outside Regina and Saskatoon MUST attend this meet in order to qualify for the Provincial Meet.
  • Registered schools may enter more than one wrestler per division.
  • Competitors who have not been pre-registered by their coaches will not be allowed to participate in the tournament.
  • Athletes will weigh in at their school. Certified weights must be faxed to the Regional Commissioner by 12:00 pm the Thursday preceding the Regional tournament.
  • Skin inspections will commence at 9:00 am.
  • The Regional Wrestling tournament is a one-day tournament beginning at 10:00 am.
  • The top four qualifiers in each weight class will advance to the SHSAA Provincial tournament.

13.SHSAA Provincial Tournament:

  • The Provincial tournament is a two-day tournament beginning at 4:00 pm on day 1 and 9:00 am on day 2.
  • Maximum of 4 wrestlers per weight class.
  • Competitors who have qualified in one weight class must compete at that weight class at the Provincial tournament.
  • Skin inspections must be completed prior to weigh-ins.
  • Weigh-ins are to be held between 12:00 – 1:00 pm on Friday.
  • If a wrestler does not make weight, or does not show up for the tournament, the wresters who placed

behind the forfeited wrestler will move up one placing. This means that there would be no fourth place wrestler.

  • The use of plastic bags, saunas or any form of artificial weight loss is strictly prohibited. The penalty is immediate elimination from the tournament.
  • There are four school team wrestling competitions, two for girls and two for boys. All individual and team awards will be presented upon completion of the final match.
