Educational & Professional Background of Instructor:

Tracy Meyer is an Associate Professor at The Illinois Institute of Art Chicago. She received a Master Degree in Applied Mathematics at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and completed all the coursework towards a Ph.D. in Math Education at the University of Illinois Chicago. Tracy Meyer is the Coordinator of the Math Department at The Illinois Institute of Art. She teaches numerous courses including Statistics and Transitional Algebra.

Course Schedule:

This is a 7 week course that meets on Saturday beginning January 12 and ending February 23.

Course Description:

This course will introduce you to statistical concepts and tests used in psychological research as well as analysis and computation.

Accelerated Format:

Argosy University’s B.A. Psychology Degree Completion Program is offered in an accelerated format. Each in-residence course includes 30 hours of face-to-face learning and 15 hours of structured out of class learning supervised by the instructor. Examples of out of class activities include group projects, videos, lab simulations, guided online discussions, and experiential exercises.

It is recommended that all students in the BA Psychology program complete the Information Literacy Tutorial available online at http://library.argosy.edu/infolit/. This tutorial provides information on the following topics: finding articles, choosing a topic, using the web, and citing sources.

Course Objectives:

1) The students will be able to do basic statistical analyses using SPSS. They will also be able to compute statistics by hand.

2) Students will be able to distinguish between different statistical tests and understand when to use them.

3) Students will be able to read a research-based journal article and understand the purpose of Statistics in real-life and psychology.

4) Students will be able to develop testable hypotheses and understand some of the statistical considerations in developing a research study.

COURSE POLICIES:

1. Class attendance and participation

Class attendance and participation are vital to your learning experience. Given the accelerated format of the BA Psychology program it is crucial that you attend all class sessions. You are allowed to miss one class session during the semester without being penalized as long as you receive prior approval from the instructor. Missing two class sessions will result in a 10 percent reduction in your final grade (one letter). Missing more than two sessions will result in a final grade of an F in the course. You are not eligible to be granted an incomplete after missing two or more sessions of the course.

2. Readings

All assigned readings are to be completed before each class session. Refer to the Content Sequence section at the end of this syllabus for a list of the weekly assigned readings.

3. Assignments

Weekly Quizzes

There will be a quiz administered at the beginning of class sessions 2 - 6. The quizzes will cover material from the assigned readings as well as the previous lecture. You are allowed to make-up ONE quiz. This could be a missed quiz or you could replace a low score.

Weekly Homework

Homework from the text will be assigned each week. You are responsible for completing the homework by the next session. All work must be shown to receive credit.

Weekly Project

Each week a special activity will be assigned that doesn’t come from the text. These activities will include researching statistics in real-life as well as creating your own mock research studies.
Final Examination

The final examination will test a basic understanding of the topics discussed throughout the session. More specific information about the content of the final examination will be discussed during the lectures.

4. Grading Criteria:

The grading scale is as follows:

5. Due dates and Incompletes

Assignments are due on the dates indicated; late submissions that have not been approved in advance will be marked down 10% each class after the due date. If you have an emergency that prevents you from completing an assignment on time, please contact the instructor.

In accordance with University policy, incompletes will only be granted in cases of personal emergency. You must have a passing grade in the course at the time the incomplete is requested. If you receive an incomplete you must fulfill the requirements specified in the incomplete contract prior to the beginning of the next semester.

The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology prepares students for graduate study in psychology and/or counseling, as well as a number of entry level positions in areas including, but not limited to, human services, counseling, case management, and human resources administration.

Psychology majors will acquire knowledge and skill appropriate for these career paths, including:

·  Knowledge of psychology, from both the social science and natural science bases of the discipline

·  Knowledge of the methods used in psychological research

·  Synthesis and evaluation of theories and methods of psychology

2.  Disability Statement:
