Miss Hong Kong Pageant

V: Leung ka Pik VickiR: Chan Ka Chun RoyE: Leung Yik Hon Edward

R: / Hey! Edward, did you see the beauty pageant (選美) this year?
E: / Sure did! How could I miss it? This year was a special one because the Mr. Hong Kong and Miss Hong Kong shows were staged together.
V: / Me too. I spent two nights in front of the TV. By the way, Can you tell me the history of the Miss Hong Kong pageant?
R: / Ha, it is a good question for me. I just searched wiki and got some information about it. I know that the first pageant organized by TVB was held in 1973. The champion was Miss Elaine Sung (孫泳恩).
E: / At that time, Miss Hong Kong was a brand new TV programme. My grandma said Elaine Sung was very elegant (高雅). Vicki, do you want to enter any pageant?
V: / Ha, am I qualified? Miss Hong Kong emphasizes intelligence and beauty. I am afraid that I don’t have enough qualifications (資格). And nowadays, being Miss Hong Kong will bring a lot of trouble.
R: / Agreed! Miss HK must possess a lot of good qualities, such as beauty, charm andintelligence. These days, the general public will search online to see if there is anyscandal(醜聞) aboutthe winners.
E: / I understand what you mean. Just like this year, Miss Hong Kong, Crystal Fung, used foul language on her Facebook page and this has aroused a lot of controversy (爭論). It was crazy and people havealready given hera hard time.
V: / Oh, I heard that. She said the use of foul language was just to express her anger at that moment. Even thoughherintention was a personal one, using foul language (髒話)always gives a bad impression of a person and so it is still taboo. And one should walk on eggshellsif one is a celebrity (名人).
R: / It's true and I think her way of expressingopinions is not decent. If I were her, I would not use the written form of foul language. It is too easy to be criticized(批評) by people because it leaves a record, especiallywhen it is online.
E: / Ha, but I think it makes us feel close to her because this shows that she is a young person full of strong feelings towards Hong Kong. She is brave to share her thoughts with the public. You know, many people are chicken (膽小) not daring to share their true feelings nowadays.
V: / Even with a good intention, foul language will injure Hong Kong’s reputation. Miss Hong Kong represents Hong Kong and all Hong Kong citizens. It is better not to do it. Right?
R: / Yes, we have to watch our language and manners. We should act as well-educated people to earn other’s respect. I don’t want to be called a barbarian when I am an adult.
