Class Description

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Visual Arts class aims to develop student’s creativity and appreciation for Art by enabling students to develop the necessary art production skills and art critique skills which they can apply in a practical context.

As stated by the International Baccalaureate program (IB), “Every person has the ability to be creative. In a rapidly changing world, it cannot be assumed that the knowledge and understanding that students develop during their formal education will be sufficient. Learning to think critically and creatively enables us to analyse situations, revisit challenges, create possible solutions, and innovate our way into a better future. Providing students with the tools for generating creative thought and encouraging creative behaviours will allow students to develop their creativity across all subject groups and foster lifelong learning.”

This concept is embraced in the Visual Arts classroom as students are growing up in a rapidly changing world. This skills learned in Visual Art apply to many future job fields such as; architects, art therapists, graphic designers, website designers, interior design, fashion design, artists, museum curator, product/commercial design, videography, photography, art educators as well as so much more. The Visual Arts also help students to refine fine motor skills, allow for self-expression and allow students to innovate and think creatively.

Class Policies and Procedures

Students are responsible for bringing the correct materials to class. Students are required to have a non-mechanical pencil for Art class. Please note, that it is school policy that students are not allowed to go to lockers during class or call home for missing materials or work.

Start of Class

Students are expected to be in the classroom and in their seats when class is scheduled to start. If a student arrives late for any reason then the student must present the teacher with a signed note from the teacher. An unexcused lateness is kept track of and parents/guardians will be contacted after the second occurrence.

Art Folders

Students are able to leave their Art Folders in the classroombut at times may be asked to take home their Folders. The Art Folder functions as a sketchbook.Itis where students take down ideas, notes, sketches, opinions on artwork and much more.

Classwork & Homework

Project due dates will be given out at the start of an assignment but be aware that due dates may change as Art is a process in which more time may be needed. Due dates will be posted on the weekly calendar in the classroom. Students are expected to complete their work in the given time and if you are absent from class you are responsible to ask what you missed and to make up your work by the end of the assignment. Although I typically do not assign homework, at times, throughout the semester, projects on artists may be given that require written work outside of class or students may be asked to look for images or come up with ideas at home.

You as an Artist are Expected To:

  1. Come Up With An Idea
