Meeting #10, 2008; April 17, 2008

Present: Marc Klowden, Charles Tibbals, Chris Johnson, Mark DeSantis, Dana Stover, Elizabeth Sloan, Gary Williams, Nic Jorgensen, Robert Caisley, Karen Humes, Michael O’Rourke and Georgia Johnson

The meeting was called to order by Gary Williams at 3:30pm. It was moved and seconded to approve the minutes from the last meeting.

Old Business:

Social Science Proposals:

Thef 386

Anna Banks sent an email clarifying the social science aspects of her course proposal. Nic Jorgensen felt her email addressed several reasons for making it a social science course. Several committee members were concerned with the course description , not seeing a clear tie to social science methods. Committee will ask Anna to write the social science aspects into course proposal and syllabus. Motion was made (C/Williams/Jorgenson) to take proposal off table and amend catalog course description to reflect social science content. Motion passed (6/1). Motion to approve course (C/Williams/Jorgenson) passed (6/1).

International Proposals:

Business 482

Committee was concerned about the course’s global aspect. (C/Williams/Johnson) made motion to table proposal. Passed (7/ 1 abstention).

Economics 446 (prereq 201, 202)

Dana Stover stated that these courses were on the original international list. She stated that several incoming freshman to the University of Idaho have AP credits especially in Economics so they would have the prerequisite. She also brought up the point that the international course list already has several foreign language courses listed that have prerequisites. (Johnson/C/Williams) made motion to approve. Motion passed unanimously.

Economics 447 (prier 201,202)

(O’Rourke/C/Williams) moved to approve Econ 447/Ag 447. Motion passed unanimously.

AgEcon 481

(Klowden/Jorgensen) moved to approve AgEcon 481. Motion passed unanimously.

New Business:

There was request by Ian Sinclair, instructor for Core 112: Feel the Groove: The Generations of Jazz from Blues to Hip Hop,to change the course subtitleto “Feel the Groove: Jazz and Beyond.” Klowden/Caisley moved to approve. Motion passed unanimously.

Gary Williams suggested that the first order of business for next year would be to include the descriptions of all Core Discovery and Core Science course in the catalog. He also suggested that the committee evaluate all Core classes and take a comprehensive look at the Core curriculum and arrange for a University wide town meeting or a task force.
