MINUTES OF THE ORDINARY MEETING

OF GEELONG MAJOR EVENTS

HELD AT CITY HALL

GHERINGHAP STREET, GEELONG

MONDAY 17 AUGUST 2015 COMMENCING AT 4.00PM

PRESENT: Cr Ron Nelson (Chair), Cr Bruce Harwood, Jenny McMahon (CEO Proxy), Julie Maxwell, Leigh McClusky, Russell Morris and Roger Grant.

Also present: Steve Bentley (Manager, Events Central Geelong & Waterfront), Kaz Paton (Manager, Arts & Culture), Paul Jane (Manager, Sport and Recreation), Sharon Cockerell (GME Executive Officer), and Teresa Seg (Minutes).

OPENING: The Chairperson welcomed the committee and declared the meeting open at 4:36pm.

SECTION A – PROCEDURAL MATTERS:

1.  APOLOGIES: Mayor Darryn Lyons, Cr Kylie Fisher, Kelvin Spiller, Dean Anglin and Cr John Irvine.

2.  DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST OR CONFLICTS OF INTEREST: Cr Ron Nelson declared a conflict of interest in regards to the 2016 Streeton Exhibition in that his partner works for the Geelong Art Gallery.

3.  CONFIRMATION OF MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING

B Harwood moved, R Grant seconded –

That the Minutes of the Ordinary Meeting held on 15 June 2015 be accepted as a true and accurate record of the meeting and be confirmed and signed.

4.  MATTERS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MEETING: Nil.

5.  CORRESPONDENCE FOR NOTING: Nil

SECTION B – PRESENTATIONS:

2016 Extinction at GPAC

Jill Smith, Geelong Performing Arts Centre

Jill Smith presented an overview of the 2016 production of Extinction. In a regional first, GPAC and Red Stitch are working in partnership to produce and premiere a touring production play titled Extinction. The play is set at the Conservation Ecology Centre Cape Otway and deals with environmental issues that no other new Australian works are dealing with. This proposal is a new and innovative model for GPAC for the development of a new work.

Cr Nelson left the room at 4.16pm

2016 Streeton Exhibition

Geoffrey Edwards, Geelong Art Gallery

Geelong has the opportunity to host a major exhibition at the Geelong Art Gallery of Arthur Streeton works. Streeton is Australia’s best known landscape partner and this exhibition would be exclusive to Geelong.

Cr Nelson returned to the room at 4.35pm

SECTION C – REPORTS

7.  2014/2015 BUDGET UPDATE

S Cockerell reported the budget reflects the decisions made at the June meeting.

8.  GME 2014/2015 ANNUAL REPORT TO COUNCIL

S Cockerell advised that the 2014/2015 Annual Report will be emailed to the Committee shortly for their review. Any comments or adjustments are to be emailed back to Sharon. Once finalised, the Report will proceed to Council.

That Geelong Major Events accepts the final reports, the GME post event evaluations and notes the officer’s comments.

23.  For Information

23.1  Event related press cuttings - The Committee noted and reviewed the event related press cuttings for the period.

23.2  Date of Next Ordinary Meeting - Monday 19 October 2015. The Geelong Major Events Committee meeting will begin at 4:00pm at City Hall Meeting Room 3.

CLOSE OF MEETING

The meeting was closed to the public at 4.56pm on Monday 17 August 2015.

That Geelong Major Events close the meeting to the public in accordance with Section 89 (2) (d) of the Local Government Act, to consider contractual matters.

The meeting was officially closed at 5.55pm on Monday 17 August 2015.
