Outside Reading Requirement Guidelines

2016-2017

Student Responsibilities:

  1. READ
    Then read some more.Bring your book to class EVERYDAY.
  2. Choose a book in your reading level, interest, and that you have not read before.
    Most books with picture will not be allowed or will be counted as a lower page count. This includes graphic novels. Large print books will also be counted as a lower page count. Only one graphic novel is counted for Outside Reading for the school year.
  3. Choose your book wisely.
    Read at least 25 pages before deciding to change your book choice.You must speak to your teacher before changing your book choice. Be prepared to give a compelling explanation for why you want to change your book. You may or may not receive credit for the 25 pages.
  4. Register your book with your teacher before writing on your outside reading log.
    Your teacher must approve your book before you read it.
  5. Read the entire book.
    Do not slack on your outside reading. Read every day for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Present a one-on-one book talk or complete a book project.
    A book talk is a one-on-one talk to your teacherabout the book you have just read.Book talks are approximately 5 minutes long. Book projects are completed on the form provided by your teacher. Any book project not on the correct form will need to be rewritten on the correct form.You may only complete a book talk or a book project on registered books. You may only present one book talk per day.
  7. Outside reading counts toward your semester grade.
    Outside reading will count as 20% of your semester grade. Yes, that is 20% of your grade.
  8. Outside reading page requirements.
    7thEnglish: Q1 = 250 pages, Q2 = 250 pages, Q3 = 250 pages, Q4 = 250 pages

8th English: Q1=300 pages, Q2=300 pages, Q3=300 pages,Q4=300 pages
English Honors: Q1 = 400 pages, Q2 = 400 pages, Q3 = 400 pages, Q4 = 400 pages

  1. Bring your book to class every day.
    Although the majority of outside reading (OR) will be done outside of class, you will have opportunity to read your Outside Reading book in your classes when all your work is completed neatly and entirely.You are required to bring your Outside Reading book to class everyday.

Teacher Responsibilities:

  1. Review student’s book choice.
    The teacher will review the student’s book choice prior to the student recording it on the book log.
  2. Sign the book log.
    The teacher will approve the student’s book by initialing the book log. Only appropriate books will be approved.
  3. Verify the book talk.
    If you present a book talk and I am not convinced that you read the book, I will note this on your book log, lower your grade, and call your parents.
