Ophthalmology update
The Chairman invited Nerissa Vaughan (NV) to update the Board and Council of Governors on the recent external Ophthalmology review carried out by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCO). NV confirmed that the RCO review process has been overseen by Philippa Green, Non Executive Director. It was noted that modelling work to assess capacity and resourcing needs of the Ophthalmology Department had recently been carried out under the management of Maria Moore, Director of Finance and Performance and Hilary Shand, Director of Operations. It was also noted that full validation of the entire Ophthalmology Hold File was being undertaken in conjunction with a clinical validation exercise. It was recognised thatadditional resources were needed.NV reported that two additional Consultant Ophthalmologist posts had been agreed in the Ophthamology Department and would be advertised in the next 2 weeks. NV clarified that the final RCO report setting out service recommendations was due by the end of October and this document would be circulated to the Governors.
The Chairman invited Rosemarie Phillips to address the meeting in relation to the Ophthalmology review. However, RP confirmed that she did not wish to raise any questions on the basis that NV had comprehensively answered all relevant questions at the recent Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee (HOSC).
Elections
It was noted that elections were underway for the following:
  • Swindon Constituency
5 seats
  • Staff Constituency
4 seats split into four classes: Hospital Nursing and Therapy Staff, Community Nursing and Therapy Staff, Doctors andDentists and;Administrators, Maintenance, Auxiliary and Volunteers.
  • Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset Constituency
1 seat.
One governor expressed concern that she had not been sent a nomination pack. BW advised that the Governance Officer would contact the Electoral Reform Service to ensure packs were circulated immediately to any one who had not requested a pack.
It was noted that the closing date for nominations was that week. Election results would be published in mid November. /
